Here is video of Actress Patricia Heaton on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?", playing for charity. The scene that unfolds you will not believe if you have not seen it. On the very first question, Heaton is asked a simple math question that just dumbfounds her. It's painful to watch! Host Regis Philbin was exhausted by the time it was over! . . . . (Watch Video)

Wrong. The answer was 30 Quarters, which required two math problems to be solved. Albeit both very simple.
Wow, I love Patricia, but that video was painful to watch. As soon as she saw it was a math question she froze up and wouldn’t even take the time to work thru the question/answers.
Once you've gotten the $7.50, two of the three wrong answers can easily be eliminated: 50 dimes is $5 and 90 pennies is $0.90. Dividing the 30 quarters by 2 and then by 2 again would quickly confirm that one as the correct answer.
I do agree with earlier posts, though, that pressure was probably a huge factor in her difficulties.
Some people get brain freeze from any math question....
That was it? WoW!
I was at a beauty school once, and decided to have my hair trimmed. Everything is done by students, but before they begin, the student must describe to the instructor what (s)he is going to do and is then judged on how close (s)he came to his/her description. I told my student what I wanted. Then the instructor asked her a question, and without any shame, she answered, “I don’t do fractions.”
That was extremely painful to watch.
I like her too...
wtf?
Well, $7.50 was not offered as one of the answers. The real answer was 30 quarters as opposed to 90 pennies, 50 dimes, and some amount of nickles.
It wasn’t that hard, but I can see how performance anxiety could get in the way. She did say she was terribly nervous before she got the question.
This mid-western girl is going to give her a big break because just before the question she said that middle America is nicer than people on the coast.
She could have a learning disability. I did/do. I can work through the stuff but it takes me a bit longer. Add the pressure and I would have been hard pressed to come up with the $7.50 to figure out how many quarters.
Anything but math is a breeze for me. That’s what calculators, scrap paper and fingers are for.
If they're hyping this up it's because they want to hurt her, and people on this forum should realize that.
Her Hubby and Her are matched book ends.. :-}
I went the route
1 Euro = $1.505 Euros = $7.50
1 Quarter = $0.25
$7.50/0.25 = 30
Answer = A
She also mentioned that she went to Ohio State. hmmmm :-)
I’m an English major....you do the math.
“(and I cannot add 30 quarters in my head eaither)”
Of course you can... There are 4 quarters in a dollar.
30 divided by 4 is 7 with 2 quarters remaining. That’s $7.50. You would have had ample time on that show.
If you can’t divide 30 by 7, either you have allowed your brain to atrophy over the years (easy to do) or you were a product of 1990’s and later public schools where they let you use a calculator from third grade on.
I went back to college in 1974 because I had a hard time calculating a ratio for a simple pigment mixture. I realized I was stagnating and losing what I had.
