Oak Park is one of handful of municipalities in Illinois that does not even allow its residents to own and possess guns in their own homes. Unfortunately for Oak Parkers, someone forgot to tell the criminals, who often insist on bringing weapons along to their robberies. The need for a decisive, bold response on the part of the Oak Park Police Department leadership was clear, and the brass did not disappoint. The answer is—whistles!

Not wishing to appear to side with Oak Park but didn’t they unconstitutionally ban only handguns? Also, haven’t they reversed themselves on that?

Unfortunately, there is no concealed carry anywhere in Illinois (at least for “the folks.”

Rule #1

Never bring a whistle to a gun fight.

Here is how it works: The city, through the department's public relations division, will purchase brass police whistles in bulk and either give them away or sell them to residents for a nominal price. The no-longer-frightened residents can go about their business knowing that, should they be robbed, assaulted, or otherwise victimized, all they have to do is blow their whistle to alert others of the attack, who will call OPPD, who will sweep in and immediately capture the miscreants.

OK. Let me see if I understand this.

A bad guy breaks in your home. He pulls a gun on your family. And you are supposed to protect your family with a whistle????

What's next? Telling victims of domestic violence they don't need a gun to protect themselves - a protective order is all they need?

Just as soon as someone strangles a mugger with a whistle lanyard!

My HS swimming coach used a whistle lanyard as a motivational tool, it would get your attention real fast!

Remember, when seconds count the police are only minutes away.

The idea of the Second Amendment is so that the people can defend themselves, not so that the people will become dependent on the police to defend them. They can’t. And they know it. The police’s job is mostly to solve crimes, not stop them before they occur.

“Just as soon as someone strangles a mugger with a whistle lanyard!”

—reminds me of the Far Side bear whistle cartoon.

The answer is—whistles!

That ought to do the trick.

It is inconceivable that the right of citizens self defense can be criminalized. What are they thinking?

This arrangement leaves the city liable for what happens to law-abiding but disarmed victims. Sue the bastards!

I used to live in Oak Park.

My next door neighbor was home alone with her kids and some guy was trying to break into her basement door. When the cops came, he said he was looking for his cousin. He was let go because “there’s not crime in Oak Park, doncha know”.

I had a ladder set up to clean out my gutters and I did that the next day. The following day, I had a citation from the city because I had dirty gutters. The inspector used my gutter cleaning ladder to check my gutters.

My ex brother in law was thrown in jail because he had a gun in his sockdrawer. His idiot wife told the police about it.

There was a famous case about the gas station owner who stopped a crime with a shotgun since handguns were illegal. Antigunners objected and he was driven out of business because of court costs.

I could go on and on but you get the idea.
