Obama: Terminal Patients May Be Denied Some Treatment Under Health Plan
Patriot Room ^ | April 30, 2009 | Bill Dupray

Posted on 04/30/2009 2:58:28 PM PDT by Bill Dupray

“I don’t know how much that hip replacement cost,” Mr. Obama said in the interview with David Leonhardt of The Times. “I would have paid out of pocket for that hip replacement, just because she’s my grandmother. Whether, sort of in the aggregate, society making those decisions to give my grandmother, or everybody else’s aging grandparents or parents, a hip replacement when they’re terminally ill is a sustainable model is a very difficult question.”

Exactly right. The feds have to figure out how to get the care out of the doctors, hospitals, and pharmas without paying for it. Only way to do that is to take over the market, and make all other care outside that market illegal.

The interesting part, and really the only part they are having a tough time with, is how do they tell the trial lawyers they’re services are no longer necessary? If the government is the only supplier, then you can’t really sue them.

Also, since they are the only supplier of health care, the industry that supplies gauze, syringes, tape, scalpels, crutches, etc is going to shrink too. Perhaps to the point where a survivor per supply left.

Barack said that we would all receive the same care as senators and representatives. Since Ted Kennedy is terminally ill and old, does this mean that he is footing the entire bill for his health care? How about Ruth Bader?

f you’re THAT sick, a hip replacement is probably not high on the list.
BUT, down the road they could be a different scenario

I believe the denial of services will be incremental—first to terminally ill, then to elderly, then to ever increasing larger groups that we cannot afford to take care of. This is how the government operates—

There might be federal guide lines about the age appropriate treatment course.

For example....a person over the age of 70 who has old age related degenerative knees will be denied life improving knee replacements, etc.

Or worse yet, people could be denied treatment if they are X number of pounds overweight, smoke cigarettes, or drink alcohol because they "contributed" to their own health problems.

Illegals will get special medical care cuz we wouldn't want to appear "racist".

Well, the man is making sense on this point. An enormous % of US medical expenditure is on patients who are dead within 3 months.

Teddy Boy Kennedy is fighting to put off His Judgement Day as long as humanly possible because He Fears That Final Judgement Will Be Eternity in HELL!

The man isn't making sense and if you think so, you should perhaps join another political party or just migrate to DU. Rationing always gets out of hand. That is why nationalized health insurance is to be avoided at all costs. We don't send our elderly and infirm out on the ice floes in America and if you believe we should then F*** you and the horse you rode in on.

Isn’t Obama’s Grandmother a perfect example of his scheme for health care?

She goes to the hospital for hip problems and a couple of months later she is dead.

Is this really the type of health care we need or is it legalized genocide of the geriatric?

You assume the cut off will be the last three months of life.

How about the last fifteen or twenty years of life and limb.

Exactly. As they already do in Canada. Also, it is “unfair” if someone can pay for the better treatment. Which is what they use as an excuse.

It reads to me like you agree with BO. He’s saying you can pay for it out of pocket if you like, but it won’t be sustainable for the public system to pay for it. Makes sense to me

In England, you will not be given kidney dialysis even if you want to pay for it out of pocket if you are over 65 years old. In practice, the age is 55. It is because there are only so many machines. When the government owns the resources, like in nationalized health care, it won't matter if you can afford it. Look at the countries where they have gone so far as to outlaw private insurance.

This country would have plenty of Health care dollars available if we were not caring for Non-Americans who are coming here by the millions every year.

We could also save money by repealing laws that require the police to take Intoxicated Persons to the Hospital every time they are found lying on the sidewalk.

Your average drunk can cost the taxpayers millions of dollars every year in Ambulance Rides and care at the hospital.

That go's double for Narcotic abusers who have a history of Narcotics abuse.

Those are good places to start cutting back.

Do you want some government paper pusher figuring out how much longer you’ll have.

The fact of the matter is that unless you're paying for the hip replacement surgery, for example, out of your own pocket, some paper pusher -- whether he works for Medicare or some insurance company -- is reviewing actuarial tables, cost-effectiveness studies, clinical trial results, etc. That's exactly what they do and always have done.

Once a person reaches a certain age or once an illness is considered to be terminal, certain tests and procedures are considered pointless. For example, why screen a man for prostate cancer when he's got inoperable lung cancer and 6 months to live?

The really tough decisions concern quality of life issues. If someone is suffering from an incurable disease yet is expected to live for another 2 or 3 years, can hip replacement surgery be considered healthcare dollars well spent? Without the surgery, the patient will eventually be confined to a wheelchair; with the surgery, the patient is likely to enjoy 18 months of mobility before dying.

Those are the really tough decisions.

I love the way that Obambi says that HE would have paid for the hip replacement himself...just because it’s his grandma! Of course, looking at the charitable contributions on his tax returns, especially before announcing his candidacy, it is obvious that HE has never spent his own money on anything that doesn’t directly benefit him! And if Toots was soooo dear to him, why did he wait for days to go to her bedside when she was ill?...and why did her brother say it was a simple hip replacement and then a week later she is dead of cancer? No doctor would do a major joint replacement on an obviously terminal patient. Just another in a long line of very strange situations that the media is incredibly disinterested in investigating!
