Russia has a major problem with population loss. Todays Moscow Times reports on a study (Babel fish translation here) which addresses the causes, consequences and potential cures for its declining population.
"At present, even with immigration, the population of the Russian Federation is declining by almost a million people a year, she writes, and consequently it is time to pay close attention not just to the overall figure but to the specific consequences of the depopulation of the country."
The population of the Soviet Union, when it was disbanded in 1991, was 293 million.

Gee I wonder why? Abortion, murder, and excessive drinking tends to lower the population.
Why procreate if you’re just accidental pond scum?
ummm..come to Brooklyn. your missing people are all here.
HEY!!! I have the solution! We have 20 million (or more) illegals here that don’t want to be home, and most want to work - come get all you can and put them to work over there!!!!
What a country!!!
They need to act to counter this trend. All they have to work with are military weapons. Georgia is just the beginning.
You forgot birth control. Wonder how we would stack up without immigration.
We need to send the poor Russkis 12 million of our illegal mexicans.
You really think that murders are having a significant impact on their population? That’s pretty ridiculous.
Short version - sin destroys a nation.
Abortion is a standard method of birth control, still and yet. As Natasha, my interpreter during a Ukrainian tour a while back said, “Why bring forth children to be beggars?”
Many things need to be done in Russia. Among these are encouraging the resurgence of religion freedom and teaching family values by example. Another is discouraging the national past time - vodka consumption. And, of course, there need to be incentives to grow businesses to help to create employment and to strengthen the economy.
There are a million changes Russia needs to make, and until there is the promise of hope, people will not want to bring children into a world with a dark future.
It could be because no one wants to live in the hell hole their government has created.
Compulsory sex orgies??
The Russians, Ukranians, and other CIS countries are having a massive religous resurgence. I live in Moldova which is still “communist” controlled and there is religous freedom. They are primarily Orthodox. I have also been to Moscow on several occasions. The old churches are being rebuilt and new ones are under construction everywhere. Even Putin had a traditional wooden church built at his country home.
From what I see going on here there are a lot of Americans who could come take some lessons in family values. I have been amazed at what I have seen in the past 5 years.
First step: institute the rule of LAW. Until then, nothing will help.
These are my thoughts when I see the Obama crowds. Much like the peasants, these people want more government control. There is a difference, though. At least the Russian peasants were not immune to labor and working the fields. Our Obama voters are the non-producers and the takers who consider work something to be avoided as long as they get their government checks. In my view, that is quite ominous.
And, yes, we also need major lessons in family values here in the New World. The Old World time-tested values are leaving us quickly. It's time to come home to Mama.
If the Russkies haven’t realized it by now, they should. Their future is to be a client state to China - which will eventually populate the vast empty spaces of eastern Russia.
First Russia, then the United States.
