On race, blacks are cowards, too
St. Petersburg Times ^ | March 2, 2009 | Bill Maxwell

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is catching flak for saying during Black History Month that on matters of race, the United States is "essentially a nation of cowards" in too many ways. Holder, the first black to head the Justice Department, is absolutely right.

Based on responses to his remarks, most people assume that the "cowards" Holder refers to are white Americans. Most blacks are cheering the attorney general for his forthrightness, and many whites, especially conservatives, are angry and resentful. Still others are just plain surprised by the audacity of the observation after millions of white people voted to elect the nation's first black president.

I do not have a problem with what Holder said. I do have a problem, however, with what is not being publicly talked about in this controversy: On matters of race, blacks are cowards, too. We may be the worst cowards of all.

Holder should make a second speech on race, this time specifically taking blacks to task for keeping silent on the abandonment of their personal responsibilities.

Oh, that's rich! Yeah, that will happen!

The author seems to think that Holder was calling both blacks and whites cowards. Nope. I can't see it that way. Holder was criticizing whites and stroking the blacks, reinforcing their self-image of victims of a society filled with people afraid to do the right thing.

Race in this country is like the Academy Awards. A fairly small fraction of the country dwells on it for weeks at a time or longer, a few more notice for a few hours each year, but most of us are totally indifferent even when it makes the news. I didn’t care any more about Obama’s skin color than I cared about McCain’s eye color (and I never heard or wanted to hear what color McCain’s eyes are).

Interesting perspective, after what I heard on the radio coming in to work this morning. Monica Conyers, wife of John Conyers, presided over a Detroit City Council meeting about expansion of Cobo Hall. Whites were heckled in the meeting and were told to go home, even after one individual was groveling and told the group how much he respected them, even as they showed him no respect. He apparently was someone in a position to hire people to work on the project as a contractor - good union jobs, etc. and supposedly, Ms. Conyers upbraided him, saying that the hired would look like him, not like her.

These people are sowing the wind and will reap the whirlwind.

God help this country.

Oh, most definitely Holder was talking about, and to, whites with his incendiary comments about race. No doubt. Maxwell takes this to task, as only a black commentator can do in this country at this time.

And there's no way Holder will give another speech about race that's actually accurate and fair. I think Maxwell realizes Holder was addressing only whites in his speech.

Bill Maxwell is a raving leftist, but as I recall, he wrote a Cosby-like piece a few years ago, urging “black leaders” to deal with the dysfunctional life of black neighborhoods and individuals. It made him very unpopular, which he mentions in this article.

The real problem that blacks refuse to examine, and which he only touched on briefly, is the fact that many of them have let their hatred of white people take over their lives and become the standard by which they define everything. They decide not to go into the sciences, for example, because it’s “too white” to do something like that. When a problem arises, they never look at the problem, but look for some white to blame for it. I’ve never ever heard a black writer discuss this, and even if they don’t care about the effect of this mindset on the whites against whom it is directed, they might consider that being sunk in hatred has massively handicapped blacks individually and as a group.

Maxwell, who is black, said that blacks had applauded Holder for dumping on whites. He didn’t say that Holder’s attack went against blacks as well. Maxwell gave his personal, Cosby-like opinion that blacks could be accused of cowardice too.

Blacks commit more than half of all violent crimes in the United States. This is caused by the fact that black parents are failures. The dad abandons the family, the children have not guidance, start to steal, do drugs, etc.. Then when the kids grow up, they repeat the process. It’s not about discrimination or poverty. It’s about the failure of blacks to be responsible parents of their own children.

I live just outside Philly and am in a graduate teaching program and I can tell you, the crime and violence in the black community, the complete breakdown of the black family (thank you welfare!), the rampant anti-intellectualism and anti-school attitudes, the constant barrage of negative messages in rap music, the lack of any type of respect for anyone except for thugs, is killing generations of blacks.

Only? ONLY????

If commentators who are not "black" (whatever that means) decline to upbraid that racist bigot Holder for his idiotic comments, it is only because they have censored themselves.

If all they did was keep silent it wouldn't be so bad, but many blacks go much further and scream "racist" every time someone lighter than a cup of mocha mentions a negative aspect of black culture. And let's not forget the ready willingness to blame every setback in their lives on racism.

My comment was that many blacks simply will not listen to a white commentator talk about race in any way, especially in a way that takes blacks to task for their own behaviors that are contributing to the race "problem" in this country.

Cal Thomas is one columnist who has written some excellent pieces about race, but how many blacks are reading and/or listening to Cal Thomas? I'd say that figure is pretty low. Nonexistent?

So when a Bill Cosby or a Bill Maxwell dares to speak the truth about race in this country I applaud it, because it's unfortunately a rare phenomenon.

I agree with that statement. Meanwhile, we get calls for "honest dialogue" on the subject of race. It's not going to happen. Whites are supposed to shut up, sit down and listen. That's how a so-called "honest dialogue" on race is supposed to take place.

I'm done with the whole topic. Blacks are living in a failed culture. It's not my problem to fix.

If race is irrelevant, why does the USG persist in collecting official data by race, including the census? Why is there a Black Caucus? Why do we have black colleges?

The Dems want to put people in compartments and make them victims in order to imbue them with certain rights and privileges not accorded to the general population.

For example, in the 1970s the USG created the phony category of Hispanics, which lumps together Mexicans, Cubans, Spaniards, Argentinians, Brazilians, Puerto Ricans, and even Filipinos. And they created the equally phony category of non-Hispanic whites so that Hispanic whites could be provided with affirmative action and minority business set asides. And the same applies to lumping Chinese, Indians, Japanese, and Pakistanis under the category of Asians providing them with minority rights.

The USG is perpetuating racism by its policies. Mr. Holder should direct his efforts towards making the USG color blind.

OK ... I understand.

I will add that:

1) If "blacks" (whatever that means) refuse to listen to people who are not "black", when they speak on the topic of race, then it is the "blacks" who have a problem. In fact, it shows that those "blacks" are themselves foul racists.

2) I agree that many folks who identify themselves as "black" seem unable or unwilling to accept personal responsibility for their own personal problems and societal deficiencies. I further agree that many of them become incredibly incensed when other folks point out the obvious. I consider this further evidence that they are foul racists.

3) I agree that it takes courage, in this preposterous and perverse society, to tell the truth on many topics.

Personally, I'll be happy to see things like affirmative action gone forever. It has tainted my views on hiring someone to work for me.

Usually, I hire based on my perception of merit and skill and hope for the best. I don't care about genetics or gender. I just want the best work and the best result. But affirmative action blurs the lines and rather than being color blind, I end up with a reflex sort of racial doubt.

Did affirmative action remove the barriers and grant them a false claim to skill or did they work their way through those barriers we all face and earn their claim to skill? If race based programs were supposed to make us color blind, they have done the opposite.
