ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Some lawmakers said Gov. Sarah Palin would return from the 2008 presidential campaign to a less friendly Legislature, and some recent comments from lawmakers seem to indicate that could be the case.
This week the governor came under fire from lawmakers within her own party. An example of that came Thursday from Rep. Jay Ramras complaining about how difficult it has been getting help from the Palin administration to transport donated food to rural villages in need.
"There's no one more basic need than to feed Alaskans. I have got little tolerance, and I bet they had a whole lot better dinner at the Alfalfa Club than what they're eating tonight in Emmonak and Kotlik," Ramras said.
Rep. Mike Hawker said Wednesday the governor was not being honest about her so-called budget reductions.
Palin has a successful track record of getting what she wants in the Legislature, but the tone could be changing. Some lawmakers say these are likely isolated instances, and Palin herself calls it simple politics.
"In these four walls of the capital building, there's politics and it's the nature of the beast in any state administration, local administration, and national administration," Palin said. "Politics do come into play, and it's unfortunate because politics seem to get in the way of doing what's right."

No one should be immune from criticism, and perhaps she deserves this (I wouldn't know) but I hate to see Republicans eat their own.
Because you don't "just rent a few trucks and haul it up there." Most of these villages are so isolated the only way to reach them is by air, which is prohibitively expensive. Sometimes the weather conditions are so bad the planes can't fly for long periods of time, and supplies run very short.

Why does the government of Alaska supply food to rural Alaskans? Sounds like Communism. Gov. Palin is right not to take part in this Communistic program.

I got that. The man is still an elected official with the duty to serve. He can take up a collection from his constituents. He can have a bake sale. He can do it himself. "Alaskans are starving and it's all Gov. Palin's fault!" My @ss.
Okay, have them come down and get the food. Why are they running out of food? Are they not allowed to hunt and fish? Why blame the governor for people starving? How did they survive up there before government planes?
I suspect he's surfing the wave of negativity to gain popularity among his "constituents". If he's so worried why doesn't he simply start a volunteer program?

That's not what I said. It's as hard for the people in the villages to come to town as it is for others to get to the villages. The state doesn't provide for them. They do hunt and fish, but this is winter, and game and fish are scarce. They must still purchase their food and supplies, but the prices are incredibly high in the outlying areas.
You should come up and take a look around at some of the villages and how they manage. And, I think Goveror Palin still has an open-door policy. Stop by the Capitol building and check with her, or maybe even go ring the bell at the Governor's house, because she or one of the kids usually answers the door.
