If Friedman had his way, Algore would be a recently departed, former two term President.
Given his track record, I’m not to worried about this one.

The depression a $2.40/gallon gas tax would guarantee would almost be worth it if I could be sure that Mr. Friedman would be among the first to starve to death.

Friedman is also one of the most Anti-American Free Trader Globalists out there....so you Free Traders must be proud!
Most liberals are Free Trade Globalists...and most love high taxes...and taxes from non-American world organizations (UN, WTO, Davos)

Great idea!! I say the Democrats go full speed ahead with this!! They should also propose a huge tax on ammunition and food.

These a**holes never fill up their car, and if they do, they charge it to their expense accounts. Raising the gas tax this much is outrageous and uncalled for.

I guess Mr. Friedman wants to pay four times the amount that he currently pays for food and clothing.

Oh yeah...that will make him extremely popular. When I see 4 dollars a gallon at the pump, I just know I will smile and say that's ok because I'm going to get a tax break. GET OUT OF MY PURSE!

I’m for raising taxes on things we don’t need.
Like newspapers, for instance.

So the economy is tanking and you want to dramatically increase the cost of energy? We only need to remember this past Summer to recall what effect that had on the cost of everything. It was the last straw before the market collapse.
1970s stagflation, here we come.

Todays financial crisis is Obamas 9/11,
But Obama's answer will be "I can tax you, the rest of the world can tax you. And the people who created this mess will be absolved of any wrongdoing soon."

I have heard some conservatives suggest that this might not be a bad idea because it would keep pressure on to provide our own natural resources. They think that the price of gas alone is what would get more drilling, shale exploration, arctic exploration, etc.
Most of us understand why this is false. Adding tax dollars to gas to inflate the price does not add profits to the oil companies. Profits to the oil companies is what drives expansion. It would have the exact opposite affect. It would drive demand down making the economy worse.
Shell Oil recorded a loss in the last quarter. We didn't hear much about that, huh? BIG OIL makes about $.05/gallon. Local and federal government make far more.
Who gets windfall profits again?
