When the government takes over an industry, there are no market forces in play; politicians who no nothing about running anything decide they know how to revive a flagging industry; and new products are made based on Congressional political agendas rather than a public demand.
When the British did a "bailout" 40 years, it was the end of the British auto industry.
Congress is about to do the same thing.

Congress has already attempted to kill it through their unfunded mandates, etc. The cos. are caught between the unsustainable costs of the unions and those imposed by gov’t, so death is inevitable. It’s just a shame that Congress intends to shovel lots of tax $ into the black hole before the expiration.
Don’t forget the Ford Fairmont and Tempo.

We are definitely not seeing the beginning of the end. The beginning was what happened in the Great Drpression still driving us toward bankruptcy at an ever increasing clip. In fact, I am afraid that we are very close to the end of capitalism and freedom and our Constitutional Republic. If you had any reservation about ‘trickle down economics’, wait till you experience ‘trickle down dictatorship’
Making smaller vehicles is mainly the reason why they've had no problem. Detroit has made their $ on pick-ups, SUV's and large vehicles, some of which have gotten a pass on the standards because they are a different class of vehicle, but no more. That, the recent high price of gas, and the unsustainable legacy costs have finally put them in the position they are currently in.
I agree I would not give them or the banks a dime. Let the market work instead of prolonging the agony and making the situation worse by bail-outs for "the chosen."
Interesting thought. However, what will Congress do about the Jap, Korean, German and Swede car companies? To force Americans to buy Congressionally made autos it’ll tax the foreign companies to the point they can’t compete.
Once they’re out of the way I’m sure we’ll be able to buy the best and cheapest cars made in America.
I am on my second Tacoma. 1988 & 1999. They are typically bulletproof.
They had a frame rust problem for 1995-2000 trucks. I had mine repaired for $200. However, they are offering Kelly Blue Book full retail value times 1.5 if I trade it in before it is 15 years old. When you trade the truck in the are crushing them to get them off the market.
I can not imagine one the the big three offering something like that to a customer after 30000 miles.

Yes... NEVER. Your only function as a responsible, tax paying, law abiding citizen is to shoulder the burden and sit quietly while your intellectual and moral superiors in Washington DC explain to you the proper way to run the country.

Wow. Thanks. I didn’t realize there was such a price jump between the base model and the extended cab version with automatic transmission.
Yeah. I guess 5-speeds aren’t all that popular. I’m funny that way, I like to shift gears, feels more like I’m actually driving the thing. Thats just me though.
Or a Triumph TR7 . What a pile of junk . Nothing but trouble from day 1 . Kept it 6 months and traded it in for a Toyota Celica liftback . THAT was a car .

I know what you mean about the Celica. I have an uncle who bought one new when he graduated from university in 1978. He drove that car for many years until he bought an Acura. He continued to use the Celica as his “commuter mobile”; he put about 200k miles on the car and it kept going despite the passenger door lock being broken (you could only lock or unlock the passenger door from the inside).
