There’s a second situation you have to understand. I shoot at a lease that has a lot of empty cartridge cases on the ground. The 7.62X39 is useless to pick up because it’s mostly Berdan primed. It can’t be reloaded.
You have to consider buying cartridges that can be reloaded and you’re back to .223 or .308. The best all around caliber is .308. The .223 cartridges are more plentiful and easier to get.

My first semi-auto rifle was a M1 carbine when I was a kid.
Fine weapon, cheap to use, easy to learn.
Based on cost of ammo, 7.2x39 wins. (SKS are cheap too)
This is a great all around combat round.
But making one (AK, SKS and others) as accurate as a 5.56 is a hard sell.
Most 5.56 will out shoot 7.62.39 guns all day at ranges of 150+yards.
Under that distance (more than 95% of real world combat engagements), 7.62x39 will shoot well enough to defend you against anything reasonable. Very good terminal ballistics.
I was raised/trained on the M16 (22+years in the service) so I prefer that weapon and have bought an M4 clone and stockpiled ammo.
A lot more folks have fallen to a Garand action, which was the deciding factor, in my case...

I may misunderstand your question, but I have several 30 round magazines for my AK-47. I have a 5 round magazine that makes it legal for hunting (although I don’t use it for that).
I would suggest that you get metal magazines, though. I have a couple of Pro Mag composite magazines that I hate. They are hard to attach, detach, and they scar easily. They have a lifetime warranty, but I hate sending them back when the lips break off. I rarely use mine anymore. I’ve never had problems with my steel magazines.
While that approach (buy and bury a Kalashnikov) is not entirely unsound, it does carry the problem of requiring a foreign cartridge.
First, there is no universal caliber or universal rifle. But if there were one, it would be the FN-FAL in 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester. Because of the adjustable gas regulator on the FAL, you can adjust it so that it will reliably shoot and eject anything you put into it. But this comes at the price of accuracy because the FAL simply is not a a tack driver although with work and a decent barrel, it can be made to be highly accurate.
Also, there was a fellow a couple of years ago that built custom FAL rifles with quick change barrels and magazine inserts where you could shoot several different calibers out of it.
you can buy bulgarian or russian ak’s in 5.56. If you buy an AK do not buy a cheap romanian knock off. Go with Bulgarian, Yugoslavian, or Russian they are the best buys in the Klashnikov arena. Bulgarian SLR-95’s are decent and the best of the “knock off” brands. They are machine made instead of stamped. Good luck.
My question was what magazines do you use with AR-15 fitted to shoot 7.62x39
Thanks for thinking about me anyway.
Dead is dead. I’m awed by the 3o-o6 whenever I shoot a deer with it. I’ve got my stash of that, as well, but humping 200 rounds of it around is a drag. As I’ve said, I love my 7.62x39 rifles, but I think 5.56 is going to be more readily available in the not too distant future. Pity, because I consider the AR a bit dainty for the climate I live in.
And this, of course, brings us back to the original question: ammunition. I think that 5.56 is far more likely to be readily available (beyond an one’s personal or family stockpile) in a SHTF situation than any other caliber.
The 7.62 and 3.08 are essentially the same 30 caliber bullet. The 30 caliber bullet is widely regarded as the best caliber.
The fun starts when you try and match powder loads and barrel length, etc. Have fun : )
I’ll check it out. Thank you.
Been checking the internet for bulk 5.56mm, most places sold out.
HK USC .45 ACP carbine (the civilian UMP). If they’re more than 200 yds away I’m not worried. If they’re closer than 200 yds they’re cooked.
Ammoman is swamped with orders and is not taking any more until he ships most of the current backlog. Try Aim Surplus.
I see. I would still stay away from composite magazines with the AR.
