I'm going to buy an
assault semi-automatic rifle with considerable magazine capacity.
Rather than ask which gun to buy (like many others have), I'd like to let the ammunition influence my gun purchase.
Okay experts......these are the parameters I'd like you to discuss for ammo calibers ranging from .223 to 7.62x39 to larger.
What is the best caliber ammo based on?
1) availability 2) cost 3) versatility (defense, hunting, etc.) 4) popular caliber with numerous gun brands 5) etc.
I shoot .762x39 regularly for all of the reasons above.
Two words: import ban.
7.62x51, or .308
.308.
“7.62x39
Two words: import ban.”
And you know the messiah is going to put back in all the bans and then some. stick with 5.56 using the SS109 green tips. There are litterally millions of rounds stateside for that caliber. or if you must have a 30 cal 7.62 nato.
I think you missed 1 category. Accuracy
The .223, .308, 30.06 .50cal have progressively flatter trajectories making the higher calibers better for snipers.
For me it probably boils down to .223 or the .308 if you have more money and expect to shoot at targets farther away.
Two words: import ban.
Ammo in that caliber is made here, as well, and readily available at the moment. Null argument...
the infowarrior
.308
Yeah...I love my 7.62x39 guns, but hedged my bets and bought an AR. Better safe than SOL.
One gun does not fit well for both Hunting and defense if you are talking medium to big game and home defense. A 308 for hunting would be too big for home defense. My home defense semi is the M1-carbine but I have varius other weapons for hunting.
.308
I never thought of the 30-06 as being very flat......
I pulled that from memory. I could be wrong.
Mostly etc.
An AR-15 can be had with uppers for both .223 and 7.62 X 39. The lower is the legal firearm, so changing back and forth means that you still have only one gun. I’m no expert on AR types, so maybe someone else can fill you in on the details.
Cost is a factor. And if you've never experienced an SKS going full-auto with those soft civilian primers, you've missed something. Sure, domestic production would kick in...after the 500% increase in ammo prices.
I have a pair of Panther .308s that I enjoy.
Basically the same internals as an AR-15, but scaled up.
Went groundhog hunting with it the other day . . . . puff of “red”
Anyone have good leads on the best buys for quality 1000 round cases of 5.56 rounds???
I have a tactical Remington 870 12gauge for home defense...
so the 308 may be a fit.
