McCain's "League of Democracies"
Posted on 07/24/2008 6:05:37 PM PDT by rightwinghour
Heres a quote from the League of Democracies speech by McCain back in June:
"Since the dawn of our republic, Americans have believed our nation was created for a purpose. We were, as Alexander Hamilton said, a people of great destinies.' In the Revolution, the Civil War, in World Wars One and Two, and in the many struggles of the Cold War, our forebears met and overcame threats to our nation's survival and to our way of life. They believed they had a duty to serve a cause greater than their self-interest. They kept faith with the eternal principles of our Declaration of Independence against the evils of despotism, fascism, and totalitarianism. And they changed the world. Democracy was born and then spread across the globe, from North America to Europe to Asia and Latin America, to Africa and the Middle East. Today we stand, grateful, on this foundation of freedom.
I know McCain probably didnt write the speech, but since he delivered it I guess he had no problem with the content. The very first phrase of that quote mentions that American is a republic, and he is at least right on that. But later he mentions that after we defeated the British, democracy was born. Nothing could be further from the truth. The founders went out of their way to NOT have a democracy in America. Ours was to be a republic. A republic exists to protect pre-existing rights. A democracy grants rights that can be taken away by a whim of the voters. I believe democracy has slowly been injected into our government, as well as some socialism, but that doesnt mean we should lay over and let those things take over our republic. But McCain doesnt seem to get it. He wants to create a League of Democracies, which would be a lot like the UN, from what I understand. Sounds a lot like a step toward a world government to me. Later in the speech he says:
"This League of Democracies would not supplant the United Nations or other international organizations. It would complement them. But it would be the one organization where the world's democracies could come together to discuss problems and solutions on the basis of shared principles and a common vision of the future. If I am elected president, I will call a summit of the world's democracies in my first year to seek the views of my democratic counterparts and begin exploring the practical steps necessary to realize this vision.
I really wish McCain would focus a little more on America, and not on exerting our influence abroad through a type of world government. Just my two cents.

Depending on his perspective, it could be a step
back from global governance. Inasmuch as I despise the thought of
another globalist bureaucracy trying to interject itself into our domestic affairs, I'm willing to look at the glass as half-full here: The U.N. is as useful as teats on a bull moose; it's a flea-infested collective run by Marxists, Third-World parasites, eco-Nazis, and oil-sotted Muzzie head-choppers. For us to build our own treehouse and only pass on the secret hnadshake to the Canadians, Brits, French, Japanese, etc., it would change the dynamic of geopolitical intercourse. We put ourselves first, and put the Kofi Annans of the world on notice that they're not going to come piss on our doormat anymore while they rifle through our wallets. McCain can pay all the lip service he wants to it not supplanting the U.N., but I'm all for it if it's a real possibility. One step at a time.

I just don’t see how a man with even a simple grasp of our country’s beginnings could think this would be a good idea!
Yes, there are other democracies in the world, but there is only one with our unique Constitution and principles... and our unique brand that incorporates it so directly as a republic. If we were to water it down with a “world” view it would cease to be America as we know it...
or has that happened already.
Thank you for bringing this to us. I hadn’t heard it yet and it gives me one more reason not to settle.

Double trouble! Under Juanito, we'll get to be part of both his League and the UN.

We are not a Democracy, we are a representative Republic. We are not governed by the "will of the people" or asinine "ballot initiatives."
This is something I would expect from an idiot like Giuliani. Then again, McCain is a "maverick" who often buys into foolish ideas.
BTW: When did the GOP become the party of Woodrow Wilson anyway?
