Larry Sinclair, Meet Brett Kimberlin

As bloggers on the Left celebrated the arrest of Larry Sinclair, the man who alleges he used drugs and had sex with then-State Sen. Barack Obama in the back of a limousine in Chicago in November, 1999, I couldn't help but think back to the 1988 presidential election when it was Indiana Senator Dan Quayle who was put on the hot seat by a convicted terrorist bomber and perjurer over Quayle's alleged drug use with the man. Sinclair had just concluded a press conference at the National Press Club this past Wednesday, which was packed with reporters and where he detailed his sex and drug allegations and his own sordid criminal history, only to be whisked away by U.S. marshals for an outstanding arrest warrant supposedly in the state of Delaware. In 1988, it was a man known simply as the Speedway Bomber, who grabbed national media attention when he made drug allegations against George H.W. Bush's vice-presidential running mate, Indiana's own Dan Quayle. In his book, "Standing Firm", Quayle described his disdain for the inordinate amount of attention the mainstream media afforded to the Speedway Bomber's allegations just weeks before the critical 1988 presidential election. Quayle writes:

[T]he press felt there had to be some drug story about the first boomer candidate, and in the last weeks of the campaign a convicted felon bent on exploiting the system cooked up just the story some of them wanted. Brett Kimberlin was a perjurer doing a fifty-one year federal prison sentence for terrorizing the town of Speedway, Indiana, by planting eight bombs in seven days. The explosions maimed several people, including a Vietnam veteran, the father of two young children, who lost his leg. Suddenly, just before the election, he was claiming to have regularly sold me marijuana. He said he wanted to show how "hypocritical" my anti-drug positions were.

There was not a shred of truth to his bizarre accusation, nor a single witness to back it up, and if anyone could have less credibility I have a hard time imagining who it would be. (CBS's "60 Minutes" would eventually spend two years looking into this story before deciding that there was nothing there.) But the media in the frantic final days of the campaign didn't care about facts and ran with the story anyway. On the Friday before the election Kimberlin scheduled a press conference. Before he could manage to hold it, the Federal Bureau of Prisons put him into administrative detention. He was in and out of solitary for the next ten days, partly for violating prison rules and partly, according to the bureau director, out of concern for his personal safety. There was a controversy, inevitably, over whether the Reagan administration or the Bush campaign pulled some strings to keep him quiet until the election was over. Whether they did overact and exert pressure, I don't know, but Kimberlin's story was so ridiculous that it should never have made its way into the mainstream media. Even assuming the worst, I'll let Larry Sabato have the last even-handed word about this incident. In "Feeding Frenzy" he says that "the responsible federal officials, if not the Bush/Quayle campaign itself, have only themselves to blame for elevating Kimberlin to martyr status. But there is also a pitiful quality to the way in which the press let itself be manipulated by an apparently publicity-hungry federal prisoner guilty of heinous crimes."

Like Kimberlin, Sinclair may simply be publicity hungry as media critic Larry Sabato described Kimberlin in his book, "Feeding Freny." Unlike Kimberlin, however, Sinclair has never been found guilty of heinous crimes and makes no apologies for his drug-using/trafficking, check forging and credit card fraud past. It is worth noting the striking difference in the willingness of the mainstream media to report on Kimberlin's sensational charges, while they, for the most part, have completely ignored Sinclair's allegations against Obama. There is clearly a double-standard at play here within the MSM as there is in every election in this country.

As to the arrest of Sinclair being celebrated by supporters of Obama, I have to ask if the Obama supporters are unwittingly elevating Sinclair to martyr status like Kimberlin was after he was isolated from reporters by federal prison officials? Two pro-Obama bloggers from Paris, France of all places, took credit for securing the arrest of Sinclair by making sure the appropriate authorities knew of his specific whereabouts on the day of his press conference. Citizen Wells blogger has already put up a post at Sinclair's blog depicting him as a "political prisoner." Sinclair is disabled due to chronic health problems and relies on a social security disability check for his livelihood. His family and friends worry for his safety and whether he is being allowed to take the medications prescribed to him by his doctors. Their concerns may be valid. After Jim McDougal was sentenced to three years in an Arkansas federal prison for his Whitewater-related crimes, federal prison officials placed McDougal in isolation because the old and ailing inmate was incontinent and unable to produce urine samples for drug testing on demand. McDougal, who was reportedly cooperating with Special Prosecutor Ken Starr in the investigation of President Clinton, fell very ill in isolation after prescription drugs for heart-related problems were withheld from him. He was pronounced dead after being rushed to a local hospital.

Thank you for posting the information about Dan Quale’s accuser. I had forgotten about all the media coverage that was devoted to that claim. We certainly are not seeing the same kind of media coverage about Larry Sinclair’s claims about Obama.

I do believe Larry Sinclair is telling the truth, and anyone with half a brain knows his claims could very easily be checked out and verified. All it takes is for the Chicago police to match the late Donald Young’s phone records against the records Sinclair game them, and for Obama to release his phone records and schedules for the rather short time periods Sinclair requested be released.
The question remains whether Obama will release the records and the Chicago PD will follow through on their investigation. We will wait and see, but I certainly wouldn’t hold my breath!

I won’t hold my breath either for the media to even ask Obama if he ever met Larry Sinclair! It is a non story as far as the Obama loving media are concerned!

I don’t believe the Clintons had anything to do with Larry Sinclair coming forward, but sure they would be wanting to find out if Sinclair’s claims are true. Time will tell if the media is forced to mention it.

I am sure if Sinclair’s claims are proven to be true that Obama will be done and Hillary would most likely be drafted at their convention. Either way, I do believe that McCain will win in November.

Like yourself, I think that Mr. Sinclair came forth on his own behalf. If he had been paid by a campaign to agitate this encounter, then he would have been financed much better, rather than reliant on donations for legal costs and his traveling expenses.
Definitely, he does not appear crazy or confused in his video appearances. Instead he methodically relates his experience and makes no attempt to hide his potentially discrediting past. I would not think that anyone would relish all the threats, attacks and the arrest that his story has brought to his doorstep. This man has everything to lose and nothing to gain by making false accusations.

I’m curious as to why he does not have the personal phone records of his contacts with the BO campaign and especially Don Young since he was contacting a national Presidential campaign and making demands for apology or acknowlegdement. Sinclair should have those records because they are quite current. However, since he seems to have no hard evidence or concrete proof, the whole thing could have been dismissed until those murders crop up.

The three executed dead gay men from his church, certainly add conjecture to Sinclair’s story. The probabilities against such a thing happening, must be billions to one. Frankly, I find it odd when anyone close to a politician is murdered and it begs for investigation. I find it really strange that a middle-aged choir director of a large church gets murdered. And the strangest part is that he must have been a long-time beloved high-profile member of that church who was not properly acknowledged after his untimely death. So now we see a large wealthy church such as Trinity who bestowed $10,000,000 on their retiring pastor offering up zero - $1,000 reward leading to the arrest of Donald Young’s, murderer? This is how they valued this man’s service and fellowship to the congregation? When you combine these circumstances with Sinclair’s video, his story becomes increasingly plausible.

Sinclair stated in his press conference that since he talked to Donald Young a few times before his death, he has supplied the Chicago PD with his phone records in order for them to match them with Donald Young’s.

During the press conference Sinclair also told reporters that he contacted his phone company and that more of his phone records would be released so they could be checked with Obama’s records and schedules.

It remains to be seen if Obama will be asked to release his records and schedules for the time periods Sinclair mentioned, and if the Chicago PD follows through with their investigation into the death of Donald Young and others from Trinity Church.

Yes, Sinclair’s claims are unsubstantiated and will remain that way until his statements are verified to be true or false. Many who have watched Sinclair’s press conference believe he provided information that can and should be investigated.

We all know very well about Obama’s dangerous political agenda for our country and it certainly has been discussed at length here on FR. There still are questions and concerns about his character and values that have not been answered. Are we to ignore those?

There is a difference between 'seeking the truth' and using this forum to perpetuate unsubstantiated smears and attempting to back them up with unproven statements as if those statements were fact (three gay murders at TUCC? - Should be easy to support with names - why do you think these new poster won't?).

Sinclair has had plenty of opportunity to provide even the smallest bit of coroborating information. He hasn't.

He is a career criminal, a con-man.

Obama has done two things...he has set his sights on conservative outlets and he has created the anti-smear site.

I repeat my earlier statement; if I were part of his team I would send folks here to subvert the integrity of this site by repeatedly posting easily refuted lies, like three gay murders at tucc.

That accomplishes his twin goals of shutting down conservative opposition by relegating FR to the kook fringe and painting any future accusations as more smears, even if they may hold truth.

Don't you wonder even a little bit about those who popped up here in the past few weeks only to feed this fire?

We all were aware of Sinclair from his YT act. We all wanted it to be true. But, wanting it to be true won't make it so. And, we did not know about Sinclair's criminal compulsions to fraud.

What unsubstantiated smear have I made upon the “otherwise stellar reputation” of BO?
If, as you suggest, all that comes out of Larry-the-con- man’s mouth is more lies, Why have they NOT been easily refuted by BO and his team? Shouldn’t the accused have been sitting in the State Senate chambers on the dates in question? Why doesn’t he hit the ‘conman’ with a libel suit and just shut him up, put the whole issue to rest?

It’s also of interest that shortly after Larry’s YouTube video’s appeared, someone(s) went on a fishing expedition on the Craig’sList Forum. In several major cities, ads were posted regarding the alleged affair or incidents in November ‘99. These ads, which had expired or been taken down surfaced on Google. Assuming that CraigList doesn’t have a news section, why would anyone post info there unless they were trying to find something/someone. After seeing those ads, it indicates that someone was looking very diligently “nationwide” to find other men who may have had similiar experiences. Who would have bothered to buy ads in every major American city? BO’s team, his opponents, or a newsreporter? Obviously, along with nearly 2,000,000 other viewers that have watched all the Larry YouTube videos, you have to admit, people are interested in this story. It is not just a few isolated Freepers that have shown interest since the story has been globally reported through the web and print media.

Furthermore, the topic of this thread is how the major news networks let an unsubstantiated claimant smear VP Dan Quayle (trying to change the outcome of an election) by reporting allegations of drug abuse. Now we have witnessed a situation where the media intentionally ignored claims for WJC until they were forced to report due to a blue dress. The media has and will deliberately ignore this story as it affects their poster child. There is no harm in examining the issue closer. Everyone on this forum understands the far-left BHO agenda. And if they watch events, they realize a vast part of this nation is either uninformed or doesn’t really care that he is a leftist because he supports their personal socioeconomic interest. If his character stinks as bad as his political agenda, they may wake-up.

Please read my posts # 12 and 13. That information about two other deaths was mentioned during the press conference.

A search of CGO area news around the date of his death (5/18/08) shows no mention at all of his supposed execution-style murder.

This took all of five minutes to find...but you may of course rely on the larry sinclairs of the world do tell you what's true.

I reviewed the Sinclair press conference video again to be sure of what was recorded. It was a reporter present that asked Sinclair if he knew of the Nate Spencer and Larry Bland deaths and she stated that Larry Bland was a member of Trinity. She also mentioned that an article came out saying that he died of an illness, but then another stating he was murdered. I tried to find the death notice of Larry Bland but could not find it. The date of his death was 11/17/07 and Donald Young’s death 12/23/07 according to the press conference information. So it appears that Nate Spencer may not have been a member of Trinity.

I have no way to know if Sinclair is telling the truth, nor do I know that he is telling lies. I hope the answers to many things will come out and be verified. Only then will we know.

I can see your point about ‘unsubstantiated rumors”, however, we also have ‘unsubstantiated whereabouts’ for the exact same dates in question, do we not?

It appears that Mr. Sinclair must be a pretty astute and thorough researcher to have gone back and combed through ten years of Illinois Congressional records and then chosen the specific dates when BHO was excused from the Senate. Next, Sinclair went back and attempted to fabricate his own records to support his travel for being in Chicago (graduation, plane tickets, hotel stay, etc.) (Except, he did’nt do a very good job of this.) Then, he contacts a presidentail campaign with his story and found them unresponsive.

Why didn’t they slap Sinclair down right then and there by saying: this is impossible because he was at XYZ, you have mistaken him for someone else and we will be sueing you for libel if you continue to harass the senator. If the allegations were so outlandish and totally refutable on the basis of the Senator’s whereabouts, why has no one done so? It would be so easy, why would any presidential campaign want this hanging over their heads?

In Nov 1999, when BHO was excused from his senate job, there must have been a very good reason (unless he was habitually absent). If there was a reason for his absence, why not confront the accuser with facts. It would be so easy to do, maybe his ‘lovely wife Michelle’ or his kid was sick in the hospital, or BHO was having dental or hemmoroid surgery. There are so many possibilities of where he could have been that would end all the ‘unsubstantiated rumors’. To stop all the nonsense and rumors, BHO could have said, “I was...............
1.) “in Hawaii, visiting my ill-stricken Grandma, the typical white woman.”
2.) “hanging with my mentor, Rev. Wright in front of the mirror” (perfecting my tonation, pitch, Southern accent, African-accent and my delivery of Change&Hope&Change&Change speech.)
3.) “having a late 4th of July picnic with the Ayers family!”
4.) “ shopping for homes with the Rezkos”
5.) “ inspecting ‘AIDs injection centers’ run by the government with Fr. Pleger.
6.) “in Kenya, visiting my cousin...”
............the possibilities of ‘a credible accounting’ of his whereabouts are endless!
