My Father in Law a World War II Veteran
News and Record Obituary ^ | April 4, 2008 | God'sgrrl

Posted on 04/04/2008 12:21:39 PM PDT by God'sgrrl

My Father in Law died last weekend. My husband and I brought him to the hospital for orthopedic surgery. The next day we found out he suffered with pancreatic cancer. The next week we sat by his side 24/7 as he suffered and died but mostly talked about his experiences in the Navy. What were his last words? "I was an Aviation Machinist Mate in the US Navy". He prayed with us. He joked with us. But he loved his country and he was so proud of his service. He mostly loved to talk about that time than any other subject. He could forget about most everything current. Ask him about his time served in the military and he could share every detail.

I was thinking about a caller to Rush Limbaugh's show last week I caught on my way to the hospital one day, In response to the Hilary/sniper incident. She said that any serviceman who dares to even enlist is the brave one, even if they never see combat, they are willing to put their life on the line.

God bless all of our vets.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving as Aviation Machinist Mate in the South Pacific Theatre...

My condolences and prayers on your loss. And blessings to those few left who fought for us then.

My great-uncle spent WWII flying rescue missions over the Pacific from Hawaii. He didn’t talk about what he saw until the year before he died.

On Dec. 6, 1941 his wife arrived on a liner from San Francisco to join him at Pearl Harbor. The next morning she woke up and said, “RM, they’re bombing the base.” “It’s just a training run,” he said - then looked out the window - and she didn’t see him again for three days.

They are laid to rest in Black Mountain, NC.

What a fantastic story. Thank you for sharing. I love these. My kids eat it up. My 12 year old son viewed The War by Ken Burns about WWII on DVDs this past fall and he loved it.

Sadly, so many teens today would rather not be encouraged to do great things. History is a great tool to show them that they are truly capable of, accomplishing amazing things NOW just like so many young people in the past who bravely risked it all. Acts of selflessness.Accomplishing much as opposed to barely completing the low expectations from the world today.

she didnÂ’t see him again for three days.

How did it go for them? Blessings to your family...♥

They endured their separation in the war and enjoyed more than 70 years together. They were the happiest most generous people I have ever known, no children of their own but caring for many and dearly loved. Their marriage is a model to me - to have seen tenderness, protectiveness, honor, gentle amusement and enjoyment last for seventy years gives me an example to follow.

I believe it. Solid individuals. God bless your family.
BTW I meant to do that. Sometimes I feel like I need to post more than once to get a point across. ;-)
