What If Fred Stays In?
Stop the ACLU ^ | John Stephenson

Posted on 01/21/2008 9:56:25 AM PST by Jay777

Fred had a disappointing third place in South Carolina after putting a lot of effort, time, energy, and money into it. The MSM and most pundits have written him off. Most think he will quit and endorse McCain. Others hope for Romney, and are hoping he will accept a deal for VP. Meanwhile, Fred hasn't said anything about giving up. He fought as the "consistent conservative" in the race, and if he quits who will the true conservatives rally behind? They will split, and whoever they get behind it will be with much less passion. The irony is….the candidate who got such a hard time for having no "fire in the belly" would leave the hardcore conservatives with a belly empty of fire if he were to leave the race.

I think there is a reason that Fred gave a fiery speech about conservatism before leaving to check on his ill mother in South Carolina. I think there is a reason that speech was not a concession speech. I think he is thinking about this deeply, and if he really believes that the Republican party needs to go back to its conservative roots, his decision may be a lot different than what the pundits think after searching his soul.

Imagine for a second, that tomorrow Fred calls for a press release to make a major announcment about his campaign. All the major media tunes in with their speculations that this will be his announcment of quitting. Instead, Fred gives a Reaganesque speech....

Fred will stay through Super Tuesday or we are doomed as a country to elect a liberal form either party.

Fred SHOULD stay in. Florida is next week, and Super Tuesday is in only 2 weeks. Texas is on March 4. Lets see what he can do, how many delegates he can amass, if he can help to rid us of Huckster.

It’d be a nice service to this country for Fred Thompson to be able to use those delegates to help stop the worst candidates, and to potentially have a roll in the next administration. SOMEONE has to carry the ball for the conservatives, and I feel comfortable with Fred being that person...but he can only do it if he stays in for another few weeks.

I think his mother may just tell Fred to stay in it. I know if I was sick and my child was running for President, I think the last thing I would want is for him to drop out on my account.

I am a die hard Fredhead, and I want Fred to fight for this. Even if staying does nothing more than mortally wound Huckster, that in and of itself will be a service to this country.

“Instead, Fred gives a Reaganesque speech....”
Oh,if it were only to be so. I pray with all of my heart that Fred will stay the course and,not only stay, but jump out of that dark little corner he’s in and just give it his all. He’s NOT TRYING hard enough to win!

Also - consider this. Though he is PERSONALLY inclined to endorse his friend, John McCain, most of his supporters are unlikely to follow, and will probably go to Rudy or Mitt...

I think there is a reason that speech was not a concession speech.

So do I. He didn't want to drop out and endorse McCain right away because it would validate the Huck/stalking horse rumors. I predict that he will do so tomorrow or Wednesday after some time has passed.

Fred doesn’t have the money to continue into Super Tuesday, except to just go through the motions and further help McCain.

If Thompson endorses McCain, he is not the man I took him to be.

Fred didn't stop campaigning in SC when his mother was in the hospital. His mother isn't a factor.

Fred will not endorse McCain. You can take that to the bank.

Republican party needs to go back to its conservative roots

What roots? The Repubs leaned that way for Reagan but are normally a middle of the road whatever you want party. We, the Conservatives have abandoned them as much as they have abandoned Conservatives and moved to the left.

I am against Hillery not for any Repub so they will still get my vote.

Mitt/Huck 2008 "The 50 State Solution

That's it alright. Conservatism dissolved in a fifty state acid bath of liberal statism in Republican disguise.

If Fred stays in he helps McCain.

He is a smart man and he knows that.
If he stays in it is because HE WANTS to help McCain.

Read the whole article. His campaign DOES have money, and if he announced he's staying in, the donations would roll in.
