What happened in the Middle East on Sept. 6?

The first reports came from the Syrians, who said their air defenses fired at an Israeli warplane that had penetrated Syrian airspace and dropped some ordnance on the country's North. The plane then fled toward the Mediterranean at supersonic speeds, the Syrians said, noting that sonic booms had been heard.

A Syrian delegation was meeting Turkish officials about the same time,

When was Pres. Bush’s last press conference - didn’t they ask him about this?

“there’s a fight coming”

There is and it will be a lot bigger than Israel and Syria.

It seems like the first thing a curious media does is ask every government official who might know something - has curiosity died or something?

Another leak appeared via the Sunday Times, this time with enough granularity to consider it a genuine leak. According to that report, the operation was carried out by Israeli commandos supported by Israeli aircraft, under the direct management of Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

Has Barak finally gotten his mojo back after his disgraceful performance as Israeli PM during the 1990s?

(I am so addicted to this story!!)

JasonC mentioned that NK ship made stops in Egypt and Lebanon prior to landing in Syria (I'd missed that). That's probably what the raid into Lebanon was about.

Has anyone independent reported on air samples downwind from the bombing target? It is very hard to blow up a nuclear or chemical warfare site without having some residue escape.

Could be why the USS Kearsarge suddenly appeared off the Lebananese coast in late August.

USS Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group takes up position opposite Lebanese coast.

Water samples too, the facility was on the Euphrates, may have to wait for rain for anything to wash off.

Still haven't seen or heard from Assad.

I read a book that said that Saddam Hussein flew 54 747 loads of yellow cake out of Iraq into Syria. All of the other WMDs were taken out of Iraq into Syria also. It could have been anything that exploded.

He was and is very good in the military realm. He just shouldn’t have been a PM. He was born to fight and does that very well.

If we knew one 1/50th of what really goes on "out there" - there'd be panic in the streets daily.

Bottom line seems to be that the bullies in the playground got their noses bloodied...They were given a "we know what you did last summer" heads up. They - and others like them - will pull in their horns for a while.

By playing it close to the vest, all the cockamamie countries don't get to weigh in and jump up and down, posturing on what they weren't privy to.

The lesson: "Don't play poker with a Texan."

Tx....this section caught my eye...

Another reason for the silence could be psychological warfare against Iran. The speculation above might be true in some variant, but by remaining ominously silent, the Israelis and Americans might be trying to shake Iran's nerve, by demonstrating their intelligence capability, their special operations ability and the reach of their air power. With the Israelis having carried out this attack, this very visible secrecy might be designed to make Iran wonder whether it is next, and from what direction an attack might come.

Normally such international game-playing would not interest us. The propensity of governments to create secrets out of the obvious is one of the more tedious aspects of international relations. But this secret is not obvious, and it is not trivial. Though it is true that something is finally being leaked three weeks after the attack, what is being leaked is neither complete nor reliable. It seems to make sense, but you really have to work hard at it.

At a time when the United States is signaling hostile intentions toward Iran, the events in Syria need to be understood, and the fact that they remain opaque is revealing. The secrecy is designed to make a lot of people nervous. Interestingly, the Israelis threw a change-up pitch the week after the attack, signaling once again that they wanted to open talks with the Syrians -- a move the Syrians quickly rebuffed. When events get so strange that interpretation is a challenge, it usually indicates it was intended that way, that the events are significant and that they could point to further instability. We do not know whether that is true, but Israel and the United States have certainly worked hard to create a riddle wrapped in a mystery

Maybe a strange idea, but my 2 cents worth.

Syria already has Sodamn Insane's WMD's, in the Bekka Valley.

Syria needed a longer range missle to reach deep into Israel from deep within Syria.

Syria now had the missle/parts to deliver Sodamn's smuggled WMD material into Israel/

The reason everybody keeps quiet, is no one wants to let the cat out of the bag the Sodamn DID HAVE WMD's, and that they were successfully evacuated out of the country. Also, it is no longer known where ALL material is at. Meaning that a substantial amount has gone rogue.

The last part of why everybody stays quiet is that Russian Spetsnaz were the ones involved transporting WMD's out of Iraq, under the UN's noses.

On the world stage, if it was known worldwide that Iraq had WMD's, and that some of said WMD's had gone rogue, it would raise tension levels of the entire world, so better to keep quiet.

Also if it was openly known of "available" materials, every terrorist org or tinpot dictator would be trying to get it.

Next, if it were admitted that there were known WMD's in Syria, then people around the world would expect something to be done, ie. the US has to do something, or should have done something, or should never had gone into Iraq in the first place.

Next, would be the worlds wondering how WMD's could be moved under the UN's noses (or under the US's). And the possibility of UN involvement (ie oil for food). Which would lead to a major black eye to the UN which could not be spun. Especially since the UN was trying to derail the US at every turn. And as far as the world is concerned, its better for the US to be the bad guy than the UN.

Next, if it was known that Russia was involved, it would destabilize alot of the world, knowing that a major nation was involved with allowing WMD's onto the black market. And the world would expect the US to do something about Russia.

The US doesn't have the ability to be in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria (and Iran). If we openly invade Syria, Iran instantly jumps in.

Being that Russia was involved moving the materials into Syria, they'd more than likely jump in to cover their ASSets. Also, Russia and Iran are almost joined at the hip now. If Iran were to back Syria, Russia would back Iran. And since Russia would back Iran, it would probably embolden Iran to back Syria.

So everybody stays quiet, to avoid the dirty little secret

Something to think about. It is believed by mid century that Russia will be predominantly muslim.
