Are those of us who so vocally support (mostly liberal) Rudy Giuliani undermining the cause of Free Republic?
Reagan couldn't have held Reagan's jockstrap if you mean the Reagan as portrayed by some fanatical freepers around here. You'd think the guy walked on water the way some freepers talk about him.
I'm not disagreeing that Reagan was the greatest President that most of us are likely to see in our lifetimes, I think he was just that, but I get very annoyed when some folks around him use this imaginary version of him to measure people and then damn them when they don't measure up.
The vote is:
a. Kicked off by JR
b. Quit on your own
c. Stay and support Guiliani
d. Stay and be a conservative
I definitely vote for D, but c is gonna be here, so you might as well stay.
LOL!
You are so passive agressive, man, get a damned grip.. Either leave or stay but quit whining.
BTW I like Rudy and think he can whip Hillary.
Shouldn't you ping Mr. Robinson?
Hell what if he takes me up on it????
LOL! :)
Even though I do not like many of his decisions, I would take Rudy over McCain any day.
Imaginary version??? Hardly. The man swept 49 states and not with a bunch of phoney rhetoric. The man turned a nation that was beaten down into the proud and great again. Reagan was not some creation of imagination, he was real. I can still listen and be inspired by his speeches that are some 30 years old.
Well you are the one posing the question, afraid of the answer?
I highly doubt anyone is going to get kicked off FR for supporting Giuliani, I supported Lieberman over Lamoonbat (And the Repub who didn't stand a chance) and I'm still here.
At least I think I am.
That's all true, but it still doesn't mean a lot of the folks here on FR would be denoucing him as a RINO SELLOUT.
Mark my words: If freerepublic was around during Reagan's term, people around here would be up in arms, denouncing him for:
1. 'Real' Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants, not earned citizenship;
2. Arms Control Agreement with the Soviet Union;
3. Runaway federal spending;
4. 'Caving' to the Democrats on tax increases;
5. Nominating RINO's Sandra Day-O'Connor and Anthony Kennedy to the Supreme Court;
6. 'Appeasing' the terrorist in Lebannon;
7. Causing us to lose the Senate, and lose seats in the House, in 1986
etc.
At LEAST 1/3rd of FR, if not more, would be saying that they 'wished he would have lost in 84' because it would have been 'good for the movement longterm' because he 'sold out his principles'. They'd be ranting 'I didn't leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party under RINO Ronald Reagan left me!' and other such nonsense.
Who was the candidate you had picked to back that has the stuff to lead Republicans?
I don't know who will rise up AW, maybe some Republican Governor will rise up and Giuliani will be no issue at all.
If it is Giuliani versus Hillary in the end, I will sure pick Giuliani over the fire breathing communist Democrat.
I would refuse to have a low IQ and stay home to enable Hillary to win and I will not be equally stupid and vote for some loser third party to thereby also let Hillary win.
We have to look at the larger picture, but I am with you, Giuliani isn't in stone as the choice of anyone and I hope a great conservative voice who is electable is found soon for the run at the Presidency.
I'll go with D.
I really really hope Guiliani stays out of the Presidential race. He has a fine combative style in front of the cameras, he will define and frame any primary debates, he was a NY Federal District Attorney fergodsake. He can win any argument, even if his position is irreconcilable to the Constitution (gun control, property rights), cause harm to the voters he demands support from (illegal immigration, overzealous law and order micromanagement mentality) and come from a perspective that sees only the dark side of the human condition (being a prosecutor does that to you).
Guiliani will never see a bill placed in front of him with a "law and order" slant to it that is not worthy of his signature, privacy rights and property rights be damned. You think Kelo is bad, just wait until GUiliani has a chance to apply civil forfeiture law to the entire country.
Guiliani will do everything in his power to legalize every illegal alien here, AND will force even greater subsidies to supoprt that population.
Guiliani is more likely to take on the law and order approach to terrorism and captured terrorists than any Guiliani supporter has yet admitted. He is a lawyer, a prosecutor, and he could end up as America's Olmert. Olmert, as you recall is Israel's Carter. I would never trust Guiliani in a time of war to be a President. He never will through away the rulebooks, the closest he ever got was firing the NYC school chancellor.
Worse yet, if Guiliani comes into office with the "Guiliani quality of life issues campaign" on a Federal level, he will permanently alienate huge sections of society forever.
And lastly, Guiliani's mayoralship and so called "fiscal conservative" policies were a fluke of Federal politics, not local. If it wasn't for the screwed up Clinton/Rubin/Greenspan economic policies that allowed NYC residents to rake in ungodly incomes from Wall Street and M&A during the period, NYC wouldn't have ahd the surpluses that made Guiliani's tenure such a easy ride fiscally.
Every single budget year, every single "cut" in Guiliani's budgets were purely political eyewash, every year he was ridiculed by NYC conservative media for the pure unadulterated BS he pushed through his PR people during the run up to the yearly raping of NYC's taxpayers.
You can't whitewash this history, you can't seriously call Rudy a "fiscal conservative" if you take anything more than a perfunctory review of his record, you can't call him a calssic liberal (small L) if you take more than a glance at his civil forfeiture campaign in NYC, you can't call him a "social conservative" at any level, you can't call him a "moderate Republican" if you look at his press releases and his own words regarding gun control, immigration, tax payer subsidies, embrace of the gay community, and his top down micromanagement of local issues.
So, while he can do the NewYorker bluster and get by on it to start, if the Republican party is to maintain any semblance to what can be considered a party of small government, of lower taxes, of a balance between civil liberties and law and order issues, Guiliani is not the man to look to carry the torch in 2008.
It will just take some Freepers, especially those not from the NYC metro area, a little longer to get disgusted with the man's history.
