At the Washington Post, Richard Cohen agrees with Hamas and Hizballah that “Israel is a mistake.”
And he’s open to the argument that Israel is a “crime.”
"The greatest mistake Israel could make at the moment is to forget that Israel itself is a mistake. It is an honest mistake, a well-intentioned mistake, a mistake for which no one is culpable, but the idea of creating a nation of European Jews in an area of Arab Muslims (and some Christians) has produced a century of warfare and terrorism of the sort we are seeing now. Israel fights Hezbollah in the north and Hamas in the south, but its most formidable enemy is history itself.
"This is why the Israeli-Arab war, now transformed into the Israeli-Muslim war (Iran is not an Arab state), persists and widens. It is why the conflict mutates and festers. It is why Israel is now fighting an organization, Hezbollah, that did not exist 30 years ago and why Hezbollah is being supported by a nation, Iran, that was once a tacit ally of Israel’s. The underlying, subterranean hatred of the Jewish state in the Islamic world just keeps bubbling to the surface. The leaders of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and some other Arab countries may condemn Hezbollah, but I doubt the proverbial man in their street shares that view."

The only "historical mistake" I see here is that Moses went the wrong way while fleeing Egypt. The Arabs got the oil, and the Jews got the desert. We've all been paying big time for that one.
Washington Post--another once respectable newspaper turned Jihad apologist. In the past year, they gave twice their space to Hamas officials, so giving space to Richard Cohen pointless sobs are logical. This is another reason why the so called "Mainstream Media" is loosing any vestige of respect it once held.
If I'm not mistaken, a very large proportion of Israelis are not refugees from Europe, but refugees from various Muslim countries were they were historically and systematically persecuted. Egypt, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, Ethiopia....
A guy I used to work with called it "The Washington Pravda", and I adopted his term because it fit so well. Years ago, it was fairly balanced, though left of center. But in the past twenty years or so, it has become DC's version of the New York Slimes. Any Americans writing in either paper are tokens trotted out from time to time in an attempt to show "the other side" and be "balanced."
A mistake? Creating a democracy, a welfaring country, a oasis within that corner of the world still halfway the Middle Ages is a mistake?
There indeed is a mistake, and it's that the WP hired that guy.
What was a crime was when a renegade terroist got on a bunch of camels and slaughter all the Jews in Medina.
What was a crime was when he continued his slaughter unabated to Afganistan and beyond.
What was a crime was when the Turks, after adopting the "faith", came and slaughtered all in their way in creating the Turkish state and the Ottoman empire.
What was a crime was when the West, having regained so much back during the Crusades, allowed the Catholic Church to undermine all the efforts to reestablish western beliefs because of the Catholics fear of historical records appearing detailing Jesus, of the Line of David, as legitimate heir to the throne of David, and his decendants, still present in Europe could make the claim overturning Rome's authority.
These are/were crimes.
Having Jews or members of the "lost tribes (european)" reestablish themselves in their homeland is fulfilment of promise and promise is destiny.

produced a century of warfare and terrorism of the sort we are seeing now...ignoring for the moment the preceding 13 centuries of Islamic warfare and terrorism (and mass murder) against everyone Moslems encounter.
