The Committee of 100 survey that I have mentioned here in the past asked the question of American opinion leaders -

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "China?"

9. S.A.R.S was mentioned by 1%. (where's this dude been?)

8. Military threat was mentioned by 2%. (and these guys are opinion leaders?!)

7. The Great Wall was mentioned by 3%. (they must have been on the moon when they answered)

6. Long History - 3% (this is the three percent of the US population that is over 100 years old)

5. Culture/food - 9% (they were eating at Panda express when they answered)

What did you think of first when you hear "China?"

TOPICS: Food; History; Society
KEYWORDS: china; culturalperceptions; culture; impressions; opinion; poll; stereotypes; survey
It is hopeful - at least - that *only* 2% of those surveyed believe that China's military threat is the most important piece of information about it; China's commercial ties to the West and dependence on the West as a market for its exports render any such military threat purely imaginary. Check out the statistics about trade between France, Great Britain, and Germany in the days preceding World War II.

Cheers!

Hopeful for the Chinese military. The most successful wars are those in which the enemy gives up without a shot being fired.

And the Chinese Communist Leadership and its military are the only ones whose "votes" on this matter count.

Cheers!
