Why Polygamy Should Be Legalized

Lately, with the FBI's decision to add polygamy sect leader Warren Jeffs to the Most Wanted list, many shows (Anderson Cooper, America's Most Wanted...) have extensively reported on this particular sect.

Polygamy in the United States is forbidden. That, believe it or not, is what causes all the problems and what helps arise dangerous sects like the FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints).

How so? Well, Imagine you are a fundamentalist Mormon (NOT a member of that sect) and as such you believe that polygamy is right and you decide you want to live your life carrying a polygamous lifestyle. Ok, maybe 40 years later, when you have settled a family with 4 wives and 35 children, you are arrested because you practice polygamy. How do you think the family of this father and grandfather will feel? And, further, isn't the United States a nation that protects religious freedom??

Because the government does not allow these people to practice polygamy, they start to feel alienated from mainstream society and start to greatly distrust the authorities and our laws. This is the perfect situation for a nut like Warren Jeffs to take advantage of. In other words, he can create a sect because those people have been forbad to follow their harmless religious believes by the government and need someone that can protect them from the government's tyranny.

Now, many will argue that polygamy is a dangerous practice perse and that this is not a question of religious freedom but of human rights. Wrong. What certainly is deplorable is how Warren Jeffs has perverted the belief and established a dictatorship within the community. But polygamy perse is in no way tyrannical in nature, it is just a lifestyle. An example of a free polygamous society is Centennial Park, AZ; located a couple miles south of the Colorado City/Hildale area. The citizens of Centennial Park are fundamentalist polygamous Mormons but they do not force anyone to practice polygamy, and everyone can join or leave the faith.

It is therefore a mere question of freedom of religion, and because the government is denying this freedom, sects and hostility towards the government arise.

If I was married to 12 women...They would ALL be mad at me at the same time....
AND I would still end up on the couch.

Note to men...always make sure the couch you buy is confortable enough to sleep on. Some of the best sleep you will ever get is on that couch-even when your wife is happy with you.

Frankly I have NO idea where I would put the extra wives, let alone 35 kids. I don't think a loving wife would look forward to a bunkbed...

And one giant bed is no solution either. I have a hard enough time getting my one wife to shut up at night, give her eleven other sister wives to discuss world problems with at 3 in the morning, and its back to the couch again for me.

Outlawing polygamy makes much more sense to me now that I'm married than before

You're right.
A tragic aspect of this subculture is the "lost boys".

They are the teenaged males who are ostracized, shunned, abandoned and even murdered to keep them from competeing for the young women.

"I did check and there is no mention in the Bible that polygamy is wrong"

1Tim. 3:2 & 3:12
Gen 2:24
Titus 1:5,6
1 Corinthians 7:2,4

This whole section strongly suggests only one wife per man and only one husband per woman.

7:9 The purpose for marriage is to prevent immorality.

As for Mormans... I don't clearly remember, but I believe that they think that Jesus Christ and Satan are brothers.

O-key doke. It doesn't specifically say it's wrong. And there are several dumbos that had more than one wife. The more the merrier, concept. But most of the Bible tells us what happens to man when he leaves God out of the picture and takes matters into his own hands. Genesis tells us the best plan is, one man for one woman. Anyway, through Samuel the prophet, God consistently said to man that a (human)king was not a good plan. But they insisted and so God said, alright then. So they got their kings. And what a mess the kings made. Absolute power?
...Yes...And absolute power corrupts absolutely!

True. Absolute power corrupts, but the only one that has absolute power within the polygamous communities in America is Warren Jeffs. You couldn't say that men married to 5, 10 or 15 women have absolute power, since, outside the Warren Jeffs' sect, women can choose (yes, choose), if they want to live a polygamous lifestyle or opt-out. So the Bible would condemn someone like Warren Jeffs, but certainly not God-fearing free good polygamous men and women.

Huh? There is no such thing as God-fearing free good polygamous men and women. When men and women hook up with multiple partners, it's really just an extension of polygamy, which incites trouble, simply because of the jealousy factor. That's why it's important to get this out of the picture because an example is being set for the American people. And those who are prone to, "just go with whatever seems right to me," instead of paying attention to what God tells us, WILL jump on the bandwagon of instant self-gratification, out of sheer ignorance...

And, as far as the Bible condemning one over the other...I don't think so...If it's wrong, it's wrong. And there's no way to turn a wrong into a right...

If anything those polygamous women are more Christian than anyone else since they know how not to get jelous and share everything with their sisters. And that takes some righteousness and a strong strong faith.

Actually, it's more like they have learned to hide the whole set of feelings since childhood. There's no such thing as a non-jealous person. However, it is true that jealousy, just like anything else, can be taken to extremes. And the strong faith, may be true. However, it doesn't matter to God because polygamy is wrong.

And, the children also must be considered. What then occurs when women hide those feelings, is they get dumped on the children. For, the wonderful system of polygamy only leaves that outlet. So, the children become unhealthy, because the mom is unhealthy. And the dad is hiding all his feelings, but is unhealthy, as well. Some want to believe that men need their many female conquests. But that is very untrue. It's only a convenient excuse to try out for, The Playboy of the Year award...

"You really should buy the book so you know what the bible DOES say."

I do know what is says. More importantly, I know what it means.

I have been reading it for most of 26 years and still it is new.

I did not take this poster seriously enough to feel it warrented that much effort.
Sometimes I spend so much time here and read so much, that when I come across an article like this, I have to double-check to make sure I am still on the conservative forum I thought I was on. ;)

The book you recommend looks like it is worth the price. Thank you, I will check it out.

You might find this informative as well... http://www.wallbuilders.com/resources/search/detail.php?ResourceID=138

Just from watching the CNN program on this tonight (the first I have heard of this Jeffs) it seems that many of the young males find themselves cast out of the group and wind up homeless somewhere in a world far different from where they were raised...but I guess these highly religious people think that is OK...can't have the younger men taking a wife when the old guys need wife # 8. The whole thing makes me ill.
