Ukrainian Orthodox group to back Communists at elections
Interfax ^ | 28 January 2006

Kiev, January 28, Interfax - Orthodox Choice, an organization formed by the Society of Orthodox Brotherhoods, will support the Communist Party in the Ukrainian parliamentary elections in March 2006, Society head Valentin Lukiyanyk said on Friday.

Orthodox Choice was set up in 2005, with taking part in the elections one of the reasons for its existence, Lukiyanyk told a news conference in Kiev.

"To date we are becoming actively involved in campaigning for the Ukrainian Communist Party," Lukiyanyk said.

The party's principles are close to Orthodoxy in spirit, he said.

He called the Our Ukraine party, the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc, the Socialists, and the Popular Rukh party "anti-Orthodox forces" because, he said, their programs contradicted the principles of the Orthodox Church.

The chairman of the Orthodox Choice coordinating committee, Yury Yegorov, told the conference that the Communist Party was consistently defending Orthodox values and was "closer to the people."

The Communist Party "proposed that we join their election ticket," he said.

Yegorov said Orthodox Choice's cooperation with the Communists was based on the two groups' "similar" social principles - combating illegal enrichment, seeking a unification of Slavic peoples, supporting the use of the Russian language in Ukraine and a negative attitude towards NATO.

One of the Communist leaders, Kateryna Samoilyk, told the conference that "the present-day Communists have nothing to do with the doings of the former Communists" and that "we have asked believers for forgiveness."

In other news: the second apple has fallen on the head of Sir Isaac Newton. "This confirms the law of gravity", said the prominent scientist.
If one is to look at it in Samuel Huntington's terms ["Orthodox civ" from his "Clash": communist movement is highly congruent with it], one could expect no less, and could have predicted it even when drunk.

Considering the present regime is anti-church, anti-semite, anti-Russian, and anti-Crimea, it does not surprise me that folks would be supporting anything pledging to remove that. Though misguidedly.

They are not misguided in the least, no more than your knee-jerk reflex would be "misguided" when your knee is tapped. What they are doing is demonstrating civilizational solidarity [maybe even unity] against a regime which desires to move away from the orbit of that suboptimal civilization.

In 1970's among Catholics of Latin America the movement arisen called "Liberation Theology" that essentially backed Marxist Regimes and movements in the region. John Paul II stood firmly against this movement, and I believe he excommunicated bishops who were supporters of the Marxist movement within Catholic Church. He knew very well what Communists are capable of and he was firm against infiltration of Communists and their ideology into the Catholic Church.

This group know very well that during Russian Civil War, Bolsheviks brutally murdered thousands of Orthodox Priests throughout former Russian Empire (incl. Ukraine). So those who claim to be Orthodox Christians and cavort with Communists, simply abominate the memory of those murdered, tortured and imprisoned Orthodox Christians.

This group is not Ukrainian - it is affiliated with the Moscow Church (run by the KGB for years)

I was not aware of that aspect. The media have focussed on Huntington's concerns about Confucian and Muslim Civilization and really never mentioned Huntington's analysis of what I would term Faux "Orthodoxy" (refering to the current, geopolitically fixated, neo-Pan Slavic, quasi national socialist imposter for a what was once a true religion).
