Sorry to be anal...but is there a security risk to a machine doing this? (I didn't see a FAQ...but I'm pretty dense.)
I installed what I showed at that link. It appeared in my system tray. Do you not see it in the system tray? If you do see it, right click it.
While I'm certainly not the definitave authority on this, there probabaly isn't a security issue related to this client. There is a heat issue however. Your CPU will be running at max when idle. This mean that you won't notice any speed problems doing your normal work, but the computer is going to be hammering itself at max. It's not inconceivable that you may hit a thermal problem if you have insufficient cpu cooling. -Mal
Does the program need to be open to be "working" or is the icon in the system tray sufficient for it to run?
Sorry, "open" as in what's pictured in post #33... ;)
It doesn't have to be open - it works in the background.
Glad I found this thread.
I started the FR F@H group over a year ago. All of the (old) computers listed are friends of mine that let me maintain their systems.
Uriah has one screaming machine. He has already broken top 10 in only a couple of weeks.
I have had F@H running for over a year. There is no security breach that I have ever noticed, and I have installed it on about 20 of the systems listed.
Sometimes I'll notice a slow response on a slower system. In that case right-click on the F@H tray icon and click on Configuration. Move the slide bar down to between 50% and 70%.
F@H uses a tight kernal that runs when System Idle is normally high. Some of the systems at work will be slow to respond so I throttle them down to get a better response.
Thank you. Very informative.
Go go us!!! Install it on work comps if you can get away with it and any friend's spares etc!
Otherwise they are just pure global warming. ;-)
No degradation in computing as far as I can tell.
Maybe you could start a ping list and keep all of us updated once a week.
With a few more computers we could break into the top 10000
Did you mean "one thousand"?
I'll toss a couple more machines at it monday.
Yes, top 1,000 :)
I've got a second machine on - hyper-threaded 3GHz pentium w/ 1GB... running two at a time. This looks like a good cause, let's see what we can do!!
I've been watching as the team steadily grinds toward #1, over taking Deep Blue or whatever supercomputer is stacking the deck against us ;')
Free Republic Folders was in the Top 10,000 very quickly on the basis of just a few systems, maxing at 60% idle. It took a while to get to 4000, then just another month to get under 3,000 as I started adding systems "for test purposes, ya' know".
I noticed a serious jump at around # 2,400 as ya'll joined in, and in less than a month we have leaped to 1,765. As we get closer to the Top 1,000 the curve we climb becomes steeper.
The fastest machine so far has been an AMD 3500 XP on a fast Gigabyte motherboard, but just a cheap video card. Most of the systems are AMD 3000's with shared video - not the fastest but very cheap ($299 delivered with legal XP Home). I have added a couple of Toshiba laptops but one of them is seldom used.
All of the computers until Systematic stared advertising for the team were located in D/FW. I will start a thread for folks to join their new Christmas computers to the team and we can where everyone is located.
Hopefully world wide distribution very soon!
If anyone starts a ping list, please add me to it. Thanks !!
You have an incredible machine if you completed 4 WUs already.
