FreeMarketNews.Com, Jan. 25, 2005 - A bill has been introduced into the Virginia House of Delegates that would place an additional penalty on motorists who have received speeding tickets. The bill, cosponsored by two Republicans, Thomas Rust and David Albo, would add so-called abuser fees.
A driver convicted of exceeding the speed limit by 30 mph in Virginia, would normally pay a fine of $100 with $50 in court costs, and have their license suspended for 90 days. The new plan would levy an additional $750 in fines on the hapless motorist.
Interestingly Albo, in addition to being a legislator, is also a traffic ticket attorney. The National Motorist Association comments on what would seem to be a clear-cut case of self interest, as opposed to public safety, in regard to his efforts. They state:
If this measure passes, it will certainly be a win-win for him. When it comes time for re-election, he can claim that he stood.........Full Article www.FreeMarketNews.com
Two years ago in Indiana, I got two tickets in a year. I paid the tickets. A year later I got a letter in the mail saying that even though I was well under my points limit, I would lose my liscense if I didn't send them 80 bucks and take a defensive driving course. They can do anything they want to you. No one will ever stand up to them.
In other words, my state professional licensing board knows full well that speeding tickets do not reflect in any way on a person's ability to act in a law-abiding manner -- these tickets are nothing more than revenue stream for local governments.
We lost a family member in an MVA caused by a person exceeding the speed limit by 30 mph. Frankly, if they want to tax speeders into oblivion, fine by me.
Done and done.
Back in the 80's there were radar jammers sold to and used by truckers. In one mode, the device would jam the out going signal. In another mode the driver could dial in a preset speed that the LEO's radar would read back. The later require one to constantly monitor the system so you would not be nailed for 55 in a 45 mph zone.
Scale Houses at state borders begain using their own dection equipment to seek out vehicles with these jammers and radar detectors. I think that Federal Law now outlaws any radar detecting device in commercial vehicles.
Better driver training, making the left lane a passing lane, get illegals off the road, enforce car inspection laws better, get driver training back in schools, increase jail time, but taxing won't do anything.
Hitting speeders in the pocketbook? Sure, it'll work. They obviously don't give a tinker's dam about the law and/or their fellow drivers, but about their pocketbooks? You bet they do. Hit them in the wallet. Higher fines/taxes/insurance premiums/deductibles. All fine by me.
No doubt the state has already spent the tax increase they just rammed through last year and has already decided they need more money, which is exactly what I expected would happen.
I hate to tell you but you are wrong.
They don't call it "The communist state" for nothing.
It all began with confiscation of CB radios and radar detectors.
Do that.....I got a speeding ticket on I81 and had to drive 350 miles to Lexington to appear in court because I was clocked over 80....and on my birthday....very sour.....
I had no problem paying the ticket...by mail....I was told that if I didn't appear in court they could suspend my liscense and tell Jersey and then I'd get my liscense suspended in my home state.....how ridiculous is that!!!!!!!
Beware!!!!
ping, fyi.
Not according to my insurance company :)
That's why we have the SECOND AMENDMENT, and in Virginia folks get to "pack and ride".
Please be polite around here. It creates horrible traffic jams when they have to stop to clean up dead bodies.
Sorry - couldn't resist ;'}
Outside agitators sometimes create traffic jams because they don't recognize that the signs saying "LEFT EXIT" really do mean "LEFT EXIT", so they try tailgating and running down cars on the left whose drivers are lawfully trying to get off the highway.
It's time for a law against OUTSIDE AGITATORS in this country. Send 'em back where they came from!
Free Market News shouldn't toss around terms like "Double Jeopardy" when it's obvious they don't know what they mean.
