The most convincing evidence about the idiocy of speeding tickets came from the state licensing board for the profession in which I work. Every time I renew my professional license, I have to sign an affidavit declaring that I have not been convicted of a crime, and listing any and all motor vehicle violations I've been cited for in the period since my last renewal. Parking tickets and speeding violations are specifically exempted from the list of motor vehicle violations I have to disclose.

In other words, my state professional licensing board knows full well that speeding tickets do not reflect in any way on a person's ability to act in a law-abiding manner -- these tickets are nothing more than revenue stream for local governments.

We lost a family member in an MVA caused by a person exceeding the speed limit by 30 mph. Frankly, if they want to tax speeders into oblivion, fine by me.

In Ireland parking infringements are exempted, but speeding incurs mandatory points on your licence (if you get 10 points, you lose your licence for a year). Those points must be declared to your insurance company. A regular speeding fine incurs two points, if it goes to court you get four.
