Repeal Cough Medicine Control Laws!
Personal Experience ^ | 12/30/2004 | Earl B.

Posted on 12/30/2004 12:32:37 PM PST by Earl B.

Okay, so I call in sick yesterday because I woke up feeling awful. Stuffy/runny nose. Muscle aches, fever, chills, headache. I took a couple of Advil, but still don't feel well enough to drive an hour to the office.

Later, in the afternoon, I feel well enough to go to the drugstore to get some cold medicine. Pop into Rite-Aid and grab a box of Drixoral (which works very well for my congestion/sinus issues). I also grab a couple of boxes of Triaminic Soft-Chews, because my son is very congested too and they work well for him.

When I get to the register, the computer flags my purchase somehow, and the cashier informs me that I can't buy all three items. Huh? It really wasn't registering with me. In my weakened state, I thought that I didn't have enough cash, or my card was being rejected. But I hadn't tendered any cash or attempted to use my card, so how could the cashier know what I could afford? I asked for a clarification.

The cashier told me that I could by any two of the items I wanted, but not all three. Why? Federal Law. Federal Law dictates how mcuh cold medicine I can buy for me and my family? I ask to speak to a manager.

Manager confirms - they can't sell me all three items. Apparently the active ingredient in my chosen medicines (Pseudoephedrine HCL) can be used to manufacture methamphetamine or some such. So Federal law limits how much I can buy.

Flabbergasted and defeated, I buy the Drixoral and ONE box of Triaminic. I took my purchases to my car, then walked into the grocery store next to Rite-Aid and bought another Triaminic.

Another glorious battle in the nation's War on Drugs.

Meth freaks won't be deterred by this stupid law. Junkies are motived people when it comes to getting high.

I'd just as soon let them have all they want till they Kevorkian.

They have these same crappy laws in Texas. My neighbor told me the other day she couldn't buy everything she needed to treat her kid's cold either.

We really shouldn't be surprised though....you've had to be 18 to buy canned air for years!

Yup, it's true. We can only see a couple of boxes per person here in WA.

After taking it just once, you'll never forget not only the awful taste, but the feeling of suffocation you feel for about 3-4 seconds ( which feels like 3-4 minutes). However, it does work, so that's what we still use.
When my Mom first gave it too my husband, bringing him a glass of juice with it, he thought we were exaggerating. Good thing my Dad was behind him to slap him on the back. Convinced him.

Breakmate (cola syrup)
Coca-Cola Classic

Each 1 liter box makes 30 refreshing 6.5 oz. drinks. There are 12 boxes in a case, yielding 360 drinks.

My mom used to give us orange juice mixed with rye whiskey for a cold.

LOL! Our Moms would have been arrested nowadays.

We always got hot Toddies.

It's the "control" mentality.
I actually kinda disagree with that. Having worked in big corporations with a lot more managers than were needed, the management staff used to basically have nothing better to do than inflict control. But beneath that control trip, was the need to justify their jobs.
Was there a DEA 100 years ago? And we survived as a country? How is that possible.
What is that old expression, "Dear God, please save me from the do gooders"

I had the same situation last month here is AZ. My two kids and myself had the flu n the same week. Nasty buggar. I tried to buy two packs of Theraflu and some Nyquil and got flagged by the register. I was obviously sick and my obviously sick daughter was with me. The poor lady at the register just rang up all my purchases, then rang up the second Theraflu separately. One of the people in line grumbled, "You should just cough on her," but it wasn't her fault.

It's legal to give your own kids alcohol in your own home, just not in public.

Yes, it is Federal Law BUT...

Oklahoma's statute is more comprehensive. All pseudoephedrine HCL products that could be used in meth production can only be sold in pharmacies, kept off of the shelves and you must show ID and sign for it. It has substantially reduced meth labs in the state and Texas and Kansas are in talks with OK to see if the program can be adopted in their locales.

This is NOT an instance of looking for drug abusers, but the makers of meth.

It sure slows the meth maker down, though.

--yep--only thing I can compare it to was an unexpected mouthful of fresh, pure horseradish sauce artfully concealed on a plain bread bun under a Polish sausage---there I stood at the hot dog stand in Breckinridge, Colorado gasping for breath with tears running down my cheeks--

You mean the states with "dry" counties that were VOTED to be dry by the LEGAL VOTERS OF THOSE COUNTIES?

Certainly I find it ironic that a county could be dry while all surrounding counties were "wet", but if the voters choose to not allow alcohol sales in that county - that's their right as voters.

But back to the cold medicine limits - that was NOT voted in by voters. It was instated by beaurocrats who like nothing more than to have a controlling hand on every aspect of our lives.

And you know what - there is zero evidence that the controls/limits on Pseudoephedrin products has cut down on the production of Meth. It's just made it a lot less convenient for legitimate cold/alergy/sinus sufferers.

I guess it's a lot like "gun control" laws - little to no impact on the crimes they supposedly are to prevent. But notice how they don't get repealed.

OK, so I'm an innocent. I know nothing about meth. What damage does it cause? What are the statistics on how many people are killed by it? It sounds like we are changing the entire culture of people selecting what they think is right to care for their family, to beat out the meth threat. Why? Is it worth it?

My eyes watered just reading that. I can't tolerate horseradish or hot sauce.

My mom used to give us orange juice mixed with rye whiskey for a cold.

My parents used to mix up honey, lemon and whiskey in an old margarine container and give us a spoonful. Unfortunately, aside from calming our symptoms, it seemed to be a precursor for larger issues in my life. Hahahaha

I would think people using it for unintended purposes would just steal it anyway. We had a big problem with teens stealing Claritin when it became OTC.

We own a pharmacy so I know who the law is suppose to target.
We are SUPPOSE to use common sense when limiting the product. I have seen enough druggies to know what to look for. They aren't the brightest bulbs on the tree. They just think they are...until their house explodes about the time a couple of police officers are getting out of their cars outside (that just happened this week in our small town). They staggered out with their clothes on fire. How do you say BUSTED?!
