Okay, so I call in sick yesterday because I woke up feeling awful. Stuffy/runny nose. Muscle aches, fever, chills, headache. I took a couple of Advil, but still don't feel well enough to drive an hour to the office.
Later, in the afternoon, I feel well enough to go to the drugstore to get some cold medicine. Pop into Rite-Aid and grab a box of Drixoral (which works very well for my congestion/sinus issues). I also grab a couple of boxes of Triaminic Soft-Chews, because my son is very congested too and they work well for him.
When I get to the register, the computer flags my purchase somehow, and the cashier informs me that I can't buy all three items. Huh? It really wasn't registering with me. In my weakened state, I thought that I didn't have enough cash, or my card was being rejected. But I hadn't tendered any cash or attempted to use my card, so how could the cashier know what I could afford? I asked for a clarification.
The cashier told me that I could by any two of the items I wanted, but not all three. Why? Federal Law. Federal Law dictates how mcuh cold medicine I can buy for me and my family? I ask to speak to a manager.
Manager confirms - they can't sell me all three items. Apparently the active ingredient in my chosen medicines (Pseudoephedrine HCL) can be used to manufacture methamphetamine or some such. So Federal law limits how much I can buy.
Flabbergasted and defeated, I buy the Drixoral and ONE box of Triaminic. I took my purchases to my car, then walked into the grocery store next to Rite-Aid and bought another Triaminic.
Another glorious battle in the nation's War on Drugs.

I believe this to be true.
I didn't know it was law, but drugstores have been restricting "large" purchases of products with pseudoephedrine in them for a while now. I know the CVS I frequent has had signs up about it for at least two years.

Just keep repeating "It's a small price to pay..."
No crazier than states that still have "dry" counties.
And, as you see, it HARDLY stops a meth maker from driving to the next store. Whatta crock. Hope you feel better soon -- that was me last week.

Oh, and for coughs if used only once a night, codeine is excellent for letting you get some sleep. It could be addictive so just one to 1.5 teaspoonfuls before bed and that is it.

Don't know for certain if it's Federal or not - lot's of states do it, including Iowa - and here, in a lot of stores, they keep the stuff off the general shelves - you have to ask the pharmacist for it. I think a 2-item limit is a bit ridiculous, but someone wanting to by a dozen should be questioned.
It is a federal law and it is absolutely bizarre.
If you need to supress a cough try to get ahold of some Buckley's mixture. So powerful I think it would peel paint. It scares the cough out of you.
I believe these things are used for making meth.
And clears up your sinus's like a fire hose.
You're lucky you didnt pick up any lithium camera batteries. Then you would have had a cold and no-knock raid on your home.

I have no knowledge and therefore should stay out of this, but...I wonder if it's store policy rather than law? Stores can have pretty stupid policies.
I'm STILL ticked off because awhile back I attempted to make one of my few yearly alcohol purchases - and it wasn't even booze - at Price Chopper and was humiliated and treated like a crook. I had my then nineteen-year-old brother with me, and the clerk turned to another clerk and asked if she'd seen us together in the store. We wouldn't have denied it if she'd asked! Then she took back alcohol and said (loudly) that they couldn't sell to me because my brother was underage.
I also have been in line behind a couple who wanted to buy a bottle of wine and were refused because one didn't have ID.
Apples and oranges, I guess, but I vented anyway! ;-)
