Should Insects be Zotted in an Animal Rights Philosophy?
http://ar.vegnews.org/insects.html ^

I include insects in my animal rights philosophy. I try to avoid accidentally stepping on insects. Also, when I find an insect in my home, I try to carefully carry the insect outside without injuring him.
With regards to animal rights, the distinguishing characteristic between plants and animals is that animals possess consciousness, whereas plants do not. Although I can not prove it with absolute 100% certainty, I believe that at least certain insects are also conscious. By this, I do not mean that insects discuss philosophy, but simply that they feel sensations such as pain and hunger. For this reason, I believe we should include insects in our sphere of compassion.
It is true that regardless of how hard we try, we are inevitably going to accidentally kill some insects during our lifetimes. It is also true that regardless of how hard we try, some people are going to be killed in car accidents. However, the fact that we might run over someone with our car by accident does not imply that it is ok to run them over on purpose.

Troll or just Stupid?
I can't tell anymore but I am leaning toward just stupid. But only because certain other members of the board have not come along to chide us for our lack of understanding and welcome.

How do you know that tomatoes don't scream every time you cut them?? Carrots, when you pull off the stems? Onions when you dice them?I do this all the time and I never heard them scream, not once, never.

"However, the fact that we might run over someone with our car by accident does not imply that it is ok to run them over on purpose."
Humans don't tend tp drink people's blood and spread disease the way mosquitoes do.
People tend not to attach to other people and become bloated sacks of blood spreading Lyme Disease like deer ticks do.
People tend not to spread malaria.
People tend not to be carriers of BUBONIC PLAGUE.
So when insects quit cavorting with disease, I will cessate my efforts to EXTINCT them.

"Virii and bacteria should be protected from specie-ist bigotry!" Actually, I think they should be contained at the DU where they can all be exterminated protected at once. It can be a virus and bacteria sanctuary (or would that be overkill?).

I hit a huge, state-sized bug in Montana (Flathead Valley) this summer....Huge revolting SPLAT on the windshield, and a lot of bug-glop on my arm.
The bug was later indentified as a DUmmie of the insect world by a crack team of Bug Experts from Montana State University.

It is a common error to equate "sensate" with "conscious".
An entity may feel pain without being conscious that it is an entity which can feel pain, or even being conscious of feeling pain.
Cats, dogs, chimps and such may be dimly conscious. Rabbits - I doubt it. Bugs and weeds - never. There just isn't enough "there" there to achieve consciousness.
I blog
books.

Why not open your home to shelter them until they are adopted? I'm sure people all over the country would be glad to send you any insects they no longer want as pets.
