>Eating our young, as was posted by someone else, is what is going on here. That, and protecting some imaginary electronic turf.

Look, us 'oldies' lost our sense of humor about vetting hot news a long time ago, 'deep in the Hurtgen Forest.'
I'm more than willing to drop other matters and go down to DC, dragging along as many people as I can get, car pooling, etc. Even without permit, during the Marathon and a Redskins game (security and road closures are going to be chaotic!). And some DC Chapter members have indicated their willingness as well.
This is neither cynical or sniping. You folks have been getting good advice about how to focus this better than all the hand waving I've seen so far. Everyone wants this to come out. But for crap sake give us something substantial to work with.

I know, and I appreciate it. The best way I can describe my reaction is "It's funny because it's true."

I think this is rock solid proof and testimony that FreeRepublic is credible. Without something real, Freepers weren't about to run headlong into a dead end like Lurch's al caca.
Checks and balances all around and I'm proud that it came down this way. We may never know if this was credible and a show stopper or not. But we didn't take the Kerry 'chicken little' route so thats plenty damn good enough for me.

100% agreement here, FRiend. As Ronaldus Magnus O"BM said (and several freepers quoted), "Trust, but verify."

It isn't cynicism, it's skepticism.

thanks for your reply. Let me say that I responded to your post because I thought that your response was one of the reasonable ones, not that I was aiming at you :)

There was skepticism, and that's fair, but insinuating that Navychief was a gloryhound goes beyond skepticism into cynicism. And i know cynicism, I'm an expert in it and will demonstrate it:

When we become more concerned with our perceived reputation than we do about getting the truth out, we are no better than the MSM.

All that was asked for was some warm bodies to show up because they wanted to try and get a crowd size that couldn't be ignored. There was no request beyond just showing up at the rally if you could. Thanks again.

Dear Unruly Human,

"All that was asked for was some warm bodies to show up because they wanted to try and get a crowd size that couldn't be ignored. There was no request beyond just showing up at the rally if you could."

Without giving us evidence, this wasn't a reasonable request.

"When we become more concerned with our perceived reputation than we do about getting the truth out, we are no better than the MSM."

No, that's wrong.

The fact is, NavyChief wanted to make use of FR's reputation. I don't blame him. He wanted to make use of the crowd, and the fact that FR is recognized by many as a significant part of the "blogosphere."

That's fine.

But he asked for something to which he had no right. Not without first giving us enough evidence to independently and objectively evaluate his claim.

After all, that's partly on what FR's reputation rests. Folks here looked at the evidence of the faked memos, and analyzed them, factually, logically, rigorously. And after having sifted the evidence, folks were able to come to the conclusion that the memos were faked.

Folks at FR did that during the Clinton years.

Finding out what the evidence and evaluating its truth value is a very, very big part of what FR is.

But, NavyChief was asking us to forego our critical faculties, suspend our disbelief, and just sign on for the ride, just trust him. Uh uh.

We're partisans, you betcha. But "fake but accurate" is their motto, not ours.

Understood. But it was my reading that all they asked for was some attendance at the rally.

It appears to me by looking at their discussion groups that email addresses were given for every major media outlet and many other sources also. There IS a lot more being done than trying to get a rally together.

Everyone wants this to come out. But for crap sake give us something substantial to work with.

Maybe we'll find out why that couldn't happen, maybe not. Your willingness to help is appreciated. I understand the FR position, and I try to understand the vets position, too. It appears that time was problem. Thanks again.

Fair enough.

As I read their discussion group at 3AM I don't believe it was Navychief who suggested that the freepers be asked for advice and attendance. I may be wrong. FR was one of many that were suggested as maybe being able to help, but I don't think it was Navychief. He had crashed after working many hours on verifying what he had. I'm not formally part of the swiftvets, I was just bouncing back and forth reading both groups as I tried to stay awake myself, but that's how I read it. Hang in there.

The Swift Vets need our support. If it wasn't for them, Kerry would be +10 now. Sunday is going to be that day, that the TRUTH about Kerry is coming out.

Let's hope so.

Good plan. Kerry has no honor, in my own first hand experience. I don't need 30+ year old info on him.

If we run with an unproven story we are no better than the liberals. With the MSM waiting to pounce on any misstep by the right, to exploit it. It is better to continue on the high roads and let them sling poop rather than hand them poop ti sling.

I have refused to become Dan Rather. Do I believe Kerry is Dishonorable, YES. Can I prove the Navy felt he was too with documentation, NO.

Viet Nam aside Kerry proves his lack of honor everyday. But it is a free country so all I can do is vote for my choice.

Bush and Cheney Novemeber 2, 2004.
