Why is the Right afraid of imposing a military draft? The number of troops in Iraq is below what is clearly needed. Additionally, many troops have had second and third tours of duty. A tired and disillusioned force is dangerous for all concerned. The National Guard troops are in great need of relief. The training most have received is minimal, at best. If the War on Terrorism is such a threat to America and our way of life the implementation of a military draft makes the most sense. Many from the right and left have compared the "War on Terror" the most important war since WWII. In fact President Bush has compared 9/11 with Pearl Harbor, stating our way of life is just as threatened as it was on December 7, 1941. A curious difference though is that on December 8th a record number of men enlisted into the military. Some lied about their age, either being under or over age. Some lied about medical conditions that would have prevented admittance into the service. Soon after President Roosevelt called for a military draft. However, no such call has gone out for this important and new era of America in the forever changed world. There was no great surge of men and women enlisting in their country's time of need. With so many for the War on Terrorism one would think the opposite would be true. Is the current generation selfish and too busy to be bothered with protecting the freedoms they enjoy? That seems unlikely. The youth of today have no memory of their own of war. Some of them had fathers who fought in Vietnam or even the Gulf War. Vietnam is ancient history and the Gulf War was quickly won with very few casualties. The President needs to impose a new draft if he wants to win the War on Terror instead of setting up a long, drawn out conflict like Vietnam. Why not call upon the youth of our great country to show their patriotism by doing their part? How could anyone object to that? More importantly, W why have the President and Congress refused to even discuss the possibility of a draft? I say it's because they all know that Americans will not accept such a bold and just move to assist in the preservation of our way of life and the integrity of America to the rest of the world. Americans are more concerned about their children. Most are more than happy to let an all-volunteer army do its fighting for them, since the majority of military personnel do not come from the best socio-economic conditions. There is no other reason than the fear of the parents of potential draftees objecting to a mandatory draft, unless the Bush administration is as inept at military matters as its opponents claim. Obviously many changes will have to be instituted since the last draft including: No more college deferment. A more democratic selection of inductees that reflects the actual society rather than disproportionate numbers of poor and minorities as was evident from the Vietnam Era draft, women must be drafted if we are to truly reflect the changes in society - anything less would be sexist and a denial of these changes and the option of conscientious objector status whereby these folks may contribute to the war effort in ways not directly related to the war. If the War on Terrorism really is, as many of its supporters claim, to be as important as WWII was, than it would seem to me to be nothing less than a treacherous act by both Congress and the Bush administration to not implement a military draft in the country's greatest need in over 55 years. The fact that we have not been asked to, legally and otherwise, sacrifice as was the case in WWII but rather the opposite is encouraged when we are asked to spend and invest as usual, is evidence to me that either the War on Terrorism is a lie or that the Administration lead by its non-military hawks, is the most inept since Lydon Johnson.
ZOT!
You can always tell a DU troll.
Paragraphs are a foreign concept to them.

Hold still. This will hurt quite a bit, but not nearly so bad if you don't move.
I'm sure he got the very best publik edukation.
Paragraphs are my friend...
Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney said no draft is necessary. The military wants no draftees. Volunteer forces seem to work out better.
I called two Congressman. Republicans, one was Rohrbacher, and the other I cannot remember the name. Both replied no draft would be necessary.
However, I do believe that these brave men and women deserve a very large salary increase. I have suggested that Congress and Senate take a cut in pay and pass the increase in the budget to the military.
God Bless the military. Bravery can't be replaced.
Hey, Bill..er, Bob, did you know that you are the 159,056th Freeper to sign on to FR?
Paragraphs are our friends. They encourage others to READ our posted articles (or diatribes, or incoherent wanderings, as the case may be).
