Thousands of Oregonians have signed a petition to get animal safety on the ballot this November, making it one step closer to an all-state ban.
People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions Act (PEACE) is asking Oregonians to put wild animals at the forefront of the ballot this year, but they've acknowledged getting 50 percent of residents on board will be an uphill battle.
'We really want to make Oregon the first state to vote on something like this,' David Michelson, the act's chief petitioner, told KOIN.
'We want to get that conversation out there. So that we can hopefully move in that direction.'
If the measure gets on the ballot and passed, it would change Oregon's animal cruelty laws.
It would expand the current law, which protects cats and dogs, to all wildlife, including those used in research.
The PEACE team has gathered nearly 30,000 signatures since October, according to the state election division.
'Our goal is to introduce people - often, many people, for the first time - will hear about what alternatives to killing animals even exist right now,' Michelson told KOIN.
Hunting and fishing are a large part of Oregonians' lives, which the initiative team recognizes. However, he said there are non-lethal to manage wildlife.
Non-lethal wildlife management can include introducing sterile males, converting chicken farms to mushrooms farms, or using using marginal lands for energy crops, Michelson told the Daily Mail.
Michelson told KOIN the initiative would include food assistance for those who rely on hunting for food.

They also added chickens, beef & pork.
This was tried once before and didn’t get enough signatures to make the ballot.
I think this is something the demoncrat majority legislators are pushing. When this fails they can legislate a compromise”
Starting to believe there hasn’t been an honest election in a blue state in decades.
I know a guy that named his sail boat after you, before you.
I would suggest that Oregonians sign the petition to get this on the ballot. The conservative turnout would be huge, just like the Transportation Tax ballot measure passed and will be on the ballot (to the horror of dems).
Agreed.
In six months, they will be spending taxpayers’ money paying cops overtime to cull the population of wild animals coming into the suburbs rooting through trash. Animals will be starving... and GoFundMes will be set up to feed them, while AWFUL boue-haired women wail about how CRUELLY we are treating INNOCENT ANIMALS!!!
Maybe “Greater Idaho” isn’t such a goofy idea after all.
In grade school, teacher read us “Tree Wagon”, an Oregon Trail story.
What do they read today???
I have serious doubts about this passing. 🙄
When that income dies, the monies have to come from elsewhere.
I can't wait to see the results of a no hunting ban in the state is going to have on the native animals that are going to grow out of control.
This will cause unrestricted poaching.
People who cannot harvest one deer per year legally will chuck all convention and kill as many as they want.
“your POSTMAN KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU AND HIW YOU VOTE!”
Everybody needs to remember this. They see the Imprimis you get from Hillsdale, the Christian devotionals, political literature. I think we can trust our carriers in this neck of the woods, but many can’t.
If they do.. hopefully black market hunting becomes liberal human hunting experience.
I would NEVER give my postman my VOTE to mail!! NEVER!!
Good. I hope it passes. Right after reintroduce grizzly bears to the state.
“I would NEVER give my postman my VOTE to mail!”
Me, either. I do think mail carriers could cause other mischief, though, if they really wanted to.
the grizzly bears are being introduced into washington, not oregon but if maybe if you told them places like Portland have free hibernation shelters and lots of chewy chiwawawawa toys they might migrate?
I suggest diving into the details a bit more.
You apparently have no idea how deep & bad this proposal is to everyone.
This is nuclear.
Indigenous people are exempt, their tribes are sovereign nations. I can foresee Indan casinos opening their own markets selling fresh meat and seafood.
I think some already HAVE!!
