Thousands of Oregonians have signed a petition to get animal safety on the ballot this November, making it one step closer to an all-state ban.
People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions Act (PEACE) is asking Oregonians to put wild animals at the forefront of the ballot this year, but they've acknowledged getting 50 percent of residents on board will be an uphill battle.
'We really want to make Oregon the first state to vote on something like this,' David Michelson, the act's chief petitioner, told KOIN.
'We want to get that conversation out there. So that we can hopefully move in that direction.'
If the measure gets on the ballot and passed, it would change Oregon's animal cruelty laws.
It would expand the current law, which protects cats and dogs, to all wildlife, including those used in research.
The PEACE team has gathered nearly 30,000 signatures since October, according to the state election division.
'Our goal is to introduce people - often, many people, for the first time - will hear about what alternatives to killing animals even exist right now,' Michelson told KOIN.
Hunting and fishing are a large part of Oregonians' lives, which the initiative team recognizes. However, he said there are non-lethal to manage wildlife.
Non-lethal wildlife management can include introducing sterile males, converting chicken farms to mushrooms farms, or using using marginal lands for energy crops, Michelson told the Daily Mail.
Michelson told KOIN the initiative would include food assistance for those who rely on hunting for food.

One does have to wonder how this can happen to states like Oregon and Colorado that used to define the wild west.
Peasants, those are all crown lands, and all the wildlife in them belong to the crown.
You can thank the chicom influencers for this madness.
These types of people think their food is raised in a back room at a Whole Foods store.
I miss the 1800’s.
I would imagine all-mail voting. The Post Office’s contribution to the Union.
These people are nucking futs.
They might have a majority for a hunting ban.
But they added fishing.
Dumb.
Oregon has almost 10% of their population that hunt.
Another reason to fill the fault line with H-bombs to blow California, Oregon and Washington into the Pacific Ocean!
I rest my case.
They don’t understand that the state wildlife agency depends on the money from hunting and fishing licenses.
Might as well change the name of the state from Oregon to Vegan.
,,, if a Bill is drafted there will be a clause in there somewhere to make riots legal.
“Our goal is to introduce people - often, many people, for the first time - will hear about what alternatives to killing animals even exist right now,“
So take it a step further…..outlaw all beef, pork, lamb, poultry and fish. Dairy too while we’re at it. See how many signatures ya gonna get now? But of course that would require people with critical thinking skills. Hardly an abundance of that in today’s schools.
NO!!!!
What will they do about native Indian tribes that have no limit no controls on salmon, crab, etc?
Careful, you're just giving them ideas...
