NY state residents are told NOT to shovel snow after two died of heart attacks clearing their drives amid 6ft drifts:

New York State issued a warning for residents to avoid shoveling snow in the upstate area, which has been pelted by 6-feet of snow, after two people died of heart attacks and a third died when their plow crashed.

As the blizzard continued into Saturday morning, with a further 4 feet predicted to hit by Monday, the NYS Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services urged residents to avoid overexerting themselves when shoveling snow.

'Take it slow!... don't work to the point of exhaustion,' the department warned following the deaths of two unidentified Erie County men who suffered heart attacks in separate incidents while trying to shovel the snow away.

The warning was echoed by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, who tweeted: 'Please continue to avoid shoveling this very heavy, wet snow - and use caution and avoid overexertion if you must shovel today.'

The Starke County Sheriff's Department confirmed that a third person had died on Friday, a snowplow driver from Etna Green, Indiana, whose vehicle slid off the pavement and rolled over, WSBT reports.

The hardest hit cities include those in Erie County, like Buffalo and Hamburg, where the snowfall has been amplified due to the effects of Lake Erie, which also created lightning and thunder.

One Hamburg resident showed off the sheer magnitude of the snowfall when they opened their garage door, revealing snow as high as 6 feet with even larger hills of snow in their front yard.

Really deep snow tends to light and fluffy. This storm is dropping heavy wet snow. That clogs snowblowers, stops pickup plows and leads to heart attacks

Middle-aged and old men have been dying from shoveling snow for as long as there’s been a Buffalo, NY. Men die from accidental drowning, motorcycle accidents, logging, and all sorts of things that keep the world going.

I moved to Phoenix and don’t miss snow, but if you have it, someone has to move it out of the way.

Really. It’s come to that? The government telling you not to shovel your driveway for “your health”

It’s the responsibility of the individual to know their limits.

Do I wipe front to back, or back to front?
Someone get my Governor on this…

Shoveling snow is a surprisingly intense activity. Especially when it is wet and slushy. Even more so when you just want to get the job over with so you can get back in the warm house, so you shovel as fast as you can.

I was constantly hearing about old men having heart attacks while shoveling snow growing up in the Boston area. I used to go around the neighborhood to shovel people's driveways for a couple of dollars. Likely I saved some old man's life a time or two.

Old men should not be shoveling snow. Especially out of shape old men. I'm 60 now and in good shape but my snow shoveling days are over. I live in a condo now where it's done for me but if I didn't, I'd pay some kid to do it.

Time for the state to start confiscating snow shovels ...

especially those ones with black plastic handles and hi capacity scoops...

nothing in the Constitution to stop that .../s

Maybe New York State should issue warnings for residents to not be such gluttonous corpulent hambeasts who are so out of shape that shoveling snow causes them to drop dead.

If you need to shovel heavy snow, a shovel design like this greatly reduces how much you’ll strain when lifting:

Working in PHX 40 years ago, I asked a Midwesterner how she tolerated the 115 deg heat and did she like it?

Her response: “Don’t gotta shovel sunshine”

When I was a kid in North Dakota, heart attacks from shoveling snow happened every year. IIRC (a dodgy proposition nowadays) victims were typically middle aged men who didn’t get much exercise otherwise.

Would it be possible to tow it all out by shoveling it onto Gerry Nadlers' several large pairs of pants and tying it onto passing cars, including No Nads-limo?

The vagrants could make a ton on money shoveling snow instead of asking people for money and cigarettes.

Government paid for emergency services have to go get those people who have heart attacks. So they might as well try to avoid that.
