President Joe Biden will order more oil released from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as gas prices are on the rise and OPEC announced it was making its biggest cuts in production in more than two years.
Biden will release another 10 million barrels this month and he will 'continue to direct SPR releases as appropriate to protect American consumers and promote energy security,' White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and economic adviser Brian Deese said in a joint statement.
In the statement, the administration also called on oil companies to 'keep bringing pump prices down by closing the historically large gap between wholesale and retail gas prices.'
The administration continued to renew its call to decrease the country's dependance on fossil fuels and warned it will work with Congress on ways 'to reduce OPEC's control over energy prices.'
Earlier this week, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said there were no plans to continue releases from the strategic reserve
Gas prices, which had been on a 99-day decline, have jumped in recent days by as much as 60 cents per gallon in some regions of the country.
But the announcement of Wednesday's release from the reserves came after the OPEC Plus energy alliance announced the production cuts in an affort to raise prices as Russian President Vladimir Putin continues his invasion of the Ukraine.
Biden and European leaders have urged more oil production to give consumers some relief at the pump and to punish Putin for his invasion.
The president has overseen the largest sale of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve ever in the wake of Russian invasion of Ukraine. Biden has released 160 million barrels of crude since March, bringing the reserves to its lowest levels in four decades

I had an ex-wife who had her well run dry, so she paid water tankers to fill her well once a week so she could pump water out. (and she is smarter than Biden maybe?)
Correction: the Strategic Reelection Reserve.
What is the jackarse going to do when the SPR is empty?
“The United States and Europe got a big bucket of cold water poured over their heads today with OPEC+’s announcement that they will cut production by two million barrels of oil. No matter how much lipstick Biden and Blinken try to put on this pig, OPEC+’s message to the West is clear – fuck off!”

Boosting oil production? BS. He’s not producing s*it. He’s taking the oil reserved for emergencies only.
Lulz.
10 million barrels sounds like a lot, but it is only a half a day’s consumption in the US. Meanwhile demand is growing at a steady clip.
Draining the tank is ‘boosting production’?
Don’t light a match; the gaslighting is thick.
“I had an ex-wife who had her well run dry, so she paid water tankers to fill her well once a week so she could pump water out.”
I’ve always been on city water. What were her other options?
That ain't production.
This is a ridiculous headline. Releasing strategic Reserve does nothing to help domestic production.
It’s not enough to reduce the price of gas a penny is it?
But it does undermine national security some more so Biden’s got that going for him.
Ever try to empty out Lake Superior with a tea spoon?
That is what this stupid SOB is doing in effect.
No, he’s squandering our emergency supply of oil to try and win an election. Should be an impeachable offense.
Hogwash! Pure unadulterated crap. Mewspeak from the rabid British press. Down is up nonsense.
ummmmmm... that’s NOT PRODUCTION!!! damn
Releasing reserves is not the same as increasing production.
10 million barrels is nothing.
Biden’s people wants the Chinese communist govt to march right in and own us. Biden’s just a navel gazing patsy. I blame Jill Biden and when all the dust finally settles I want her charged with treason and sedition... Oh, and having the worst fashion taste in the history of first ladies, even worse than big Mike.
Yeah.
And don’t forget the charges of Elder Abuse.
