Male contraceptive pill could enter human trials in just two months, inventors say, after study on mice showed it could prevent 99% of pregnancies

A male contraceptive pill could be tested in humans in just two months, scientists say — after it showed promise in trials on mice.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota, who invented the drug, say it could enter clinical trials as early as this July.

The non-hormonal pill, medically named YCT529, blocked 99 per cent of pregnancies in mice during tests — putting it on a par with the female birth control medication.

It also did not trigger any visible side-effects, such as weight gain, and male mice were able to father pups four to six weeks after administration was stopped.

Dr Gunda Georg, a chemist at the Minneapolis-based school, revealed to Vice that the drug could enter human trials in 'the second half of this year'.

She said the previous trials showed it had the 'desired effect' in mice, while also ensuring they remain 'viable and healthy'

'Of course, you have to be careful with this analysis because they are mice and not humans, but nevertheless the effect was very, very promising,' he said.

YourChoice Therapeutics — the manufacturer which says it aims to 'revolutionize' contraception — will apply to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for permission to begin the trials.

The number of participants being recruited and their ages were not revealed.

Scientists have been trying since the 1950s to develop an effective male oral contraceptive, including pills, gels and injections.

Every baby born should have a paternity test done by default.

So far 90% effective in MICE. Wonder how they are gonna get meaningful statistics on it’s effectiveness?

Yeah baby, I’m on the pill. But is she gonna be on her own pill? Entrapment scenario on a bull headed guy thinking with the wrong head.

Yct 529 is an inhibitor of retinoic acid...a metabolite of vitamin A. There is too much info for this note....so look up yct 529 on Wikipedia and RAR on Wikipedia to give you more info on the biological activity of RAR and Vitamin A. To give you an idea of what yct can do to you.

“Male contraceptive pill could enter human trials in just two months, inventors say, after study on mice showed it could prevent 99% of pregnancies”

Most of men that I know don’t need any pills to not get pregnant. Of course, there are now others who ‘claim’ to be male, but weren’t born that way, so maybe the pill is needed for them?

Some links would have been nice since wikipedia has no listing for yct529 pr yct 529

and when you say RAR most people might not assume “Retinoic acid receptor alpha”

It will be interesting to see if there are symptoms such as those one might see with Accutane

Who’s going to volunteer for the trials? What if it ruins your health? Makes you sterile permanently? Has bad side effects? Doesn’t work and there’s a pregnancy?

Also this could help potentially catch accidental baby swaps by hospital staff.

I just googled “yct 529 wiki”...got it in German but got it translated to English. If I Google “RAR...retinoic wiki”..I get it....very interesting....the listings on duckduckgo include RAR(retinoic acid receptor) in their heading...
I hope that clarifies it a bit....my main point was to alert folks not to think that a chemical compound doesn’t do ONLY what it is marketed or tested for...lots of biochemistry and pharmacology needs to be done...not a great idea to mess with vitamin A pathways. It is not called a vitamin for no reason.
