Don't spin the Civil War
Washington Post ^ | 12.27.10 | E.J. DIONNE jR.

The Civil War is about to loom very large in the popular memory. We would do well to be candid about its causes and not allow the distortions of contemporary politics or long-standing myths to cloud our understanding of why the nation fell apart.

The coming year will mark the 150th anniversary of the onset of the conflict, which is usually dated to April 12, 1861, when Confederate batteries opened fire at 4:30 a.m. on federal troops occupying Fort Sumter. Union forces surrendered the next day, after 34 hours of shelling.

Sounds like something Desiree Thibodeau might say, kinda like 'magnet fishing'.

“Kind of hard to industrialize when raw materials were being kept out by a BLOCKADE.”

By 1820 the Industrial Revolution was well underway in the Northern States however, the South refused to adopt the technology developed during that time.

Could you please provide evidence that the Union blockaded the Southern ports beginning in 1820 which would have indeed hampered their ability to industrialize?

“NeoYankees here wish to use an article by EJ Dionne on a conservative forum to bolster their race based bigotry against white southerners on Free Republic.”

I’m a white southerner and I posted the article, but I don’t understand how stating that slavery was the primary reason for the South’s secession from the Union is racist.

Of course, the Confederate Apologists claim that “States’ Rights” was the reason for the South’s abandonment of the Union. However, the Founding Documents of the Confederacy clearly state that slavery was the primary issue that lead to secession.

Finally, the Confederate Apologists refuse to answer two simple questions:

If secession was not about slavery and was instead about state’s rights, why is it that the Declarations of Secession of South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Texas mention slavery a total of 82 times and do not mention the 10th Amendment or States’ Rights at all?

Some of the Confederate Apologists claim that the CSA was on the verge of abolishing slavery just as the Civil War began. If that is the case, why did the CSA Constitution states that laws abolishing slavery could never be passed?

Why did the Union not free slaves until after the WBTS? The EP in 1863 left over 1 Million slaves in bondage...in the UNION.

I think we all understand what President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation did or did not accomplish. And we understand that such an executive order came much too late for a nation of civilized people.

Now, could you please point to any attempt by the Executive or Legislative branches of the CSA which would have freed three million slaves?

Were you planning on answering this question?

If secession was not about slavery and was instead about state’s rights, why is it that the Declarations of Secession of South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Texas mention slavery a total of 82 times and do not mention the 10th Amendment or States’ Rights at all?

Those who were never in the belly of the beast could not possibly understand.

I know I can't. I have met some... I have had conversations and 'debates' with hard core leftists a few times which went totally circular until they inevitably exploded in rage and resorted to the typical ad hominem attacks. But you are correct. I only really know them in the abstract.

I read Horowitz's Radical Son a number of years ago and found it profound in that it gave me a fair idea just how ugly the belly of the American leftist beast is.

Wow! You are so wise to have only been on FR for a few minutes.
If you truly had been here a while you wouldn’t be supporting anything this liberal says. As you can clearly see no one else does.

To satisfy some, shouldn’t it be “The War of Northern Agression”? :-)

Metmom:So, you came on the Religion Forum with the intent to disrupt and mock the beliefs of others?

I found this thread on the main forum page. How does one tell that a thread is on the Religion Forum?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t such beliefs as Islam and Mormonism regularly mocked on this very forum? Is the problem that it’s your particular ox that’s being gored?
