Southerners looking to share their Confederate holiday
Hartford Courant ^ | March 22, 2009 | Dahleen Glanton

ATLANTA — In a cultural war that has pitted Old South against new, defenders of the Confederate legacy have opened a fresh front in their campaign to polish an image tarnished, they said, by people who do not respect Southern values.

With the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States in 2011, efforts are under way in statehouses, small towns and counties across the South to push for proclamations or legislation promoting Confederate history.

When writing that, I was thinking more along the lines of some of the soldiers who didn’t have the ‘fervor’ of many
Confederate politicians, but you raise some good points.

I suppose we’ll never know.

When Obonga takes your freedom away with his right hand while waving the constitution with his left hand, are you just going to grin and say "Otay, Spanky...whatever you say...."?

Why not answer the question. Is the Constitution really as meaningless to you as you seem to indicate?

Simply go to the very first post that you ever made on FR on a WBTS thread and then every post from there.

Can't do it, huh?

By the way, I overlooked something in my previous response.

You wrote: Since everything is the fault of Lincoln, then it would only be fair to project a confederacy based on the policies of Jefferson Davis, wouldn't you agree?

I don't recall ever saying everything was the fault of Lincoln, or of ever even saying anything bad about Lincoln. The only exception might be that (as a warning to the anti-Confederacy folks) I sometimes note that Lincoln could easily be declared a non-person and purged from the American heroes list if the same standards were applied to him that are applied to the Confederates. Other than his opposition to slavery (though he was willing tolerate its presence to preserve the union) he was a pretty non-PC fellow. I don't hate Lincoln at all and usually don't even participate in the debates over the whether secession was right or wrong, whether the North or the South was to blame, etc.

I mainly participate in these debates to defend our rights to honor our ancestors and our regional heritage, and to challenge the idiotic and destructive campaign to demonize the Confederacy, its leaders, and its soldiers. Because unless this is stopped, it's going to lead to some very bad national consequences later.

Why waste the effort?

That's probably a wise decision.

It's much safer for you to keep your plus sized arse in them Maine woods.

The military rebellion lasted four years and ended with defeat and a large percentage of the Confederate army and public quitting the fight when the going got tough. The Confederate rebellion of the mouth and pen has lasted 150 years and has yet to admit defeat. If General Lee and the CSA had been as persistent and inventive as their latter day supporters, the Union would not have had a chance.

You continue to dazzle the pages of FR with your brilliant and masterful musings.........

So in short, your confederacy could very well have become a police state keeping a restive minority in check with socialistic policies and high taxes.

If you look at the demographics, that would have likely been a restive MAJORITY! The South Africa analogy would likely be very close to reality if not not the Haiti option.

It ain't the words on a piece of paper that I'm talking about, you damn fool.

It's the actions of yankee rascals, such as Lincoln, Roosevelt, Clinton, Pelois, Reid, Obonga, Schumer, Fwank, et al, who bastardize or ignore the Constitution that I'm talking about.

The solution for South Africa would be to divide the nation and give whites and blacks their own territory, possibly even multiple territories for the blacks since the various tribes hate one another. Multiculturalism never works.

Again, when have I ever blamed Lincoln for anything, let alone all our ills?

You can speculate on all day and “predict” that the South would have become a horrible imperialist place of unmitigated evil, but speculation is all it is. I merely asked you not to speculate, but to look at present day America, AS IT EXISTS, and imagine how elections would go if the South weren’t there. We know how they would go, don't we? We don't have to speculate based on some wartime action Lincoln took or some diatribe by a Radical Republican circa 1866.

We KNOW how the non-South US votes. I'd just like to know if you'd like to live in such a nation or if you're happy that the South is here to hold socialism back a little. We do the best we can, but as the creeping blue continues to move into Virginia and elsewhere we may not be able to do it for long.

For the record, I don't bemoan the fact that we're still part of the Union. I'm proud to be an American citizen. I just get tired of being bashed, on a conservative message board no less, for wanting to celebrate the ancestral heritage of possibly the last remaining bulwark against the United Socialist States of America.

I don't recall ever saying everything was the fault of Lincoln, or of ever even saying anything bad about Lincoln.

But Lincoln was the death of our Republic, isn't that what all you Southron types believe? His actions led to the end of the government our founders created for us, isn't that what you all say? He was a tyrant, and big government supporter, blah, blah, blah.

The only exception might be that (as a warning to the anti-Confederacy folks) I sometimes note that Lincoln could easily be declared a non-person and purged from the American heroes list if the same standards were applied to him that are applied to the Confederates.

For example? And I'm really interested in hearing what you have to say on this.

Other than his opposition to slavery (though he was willing tolerate its presence to preserve the union) he was a pretty non-PC fellow.

Under what standards? By the standards of today? I'd be hard pressed to think of any American leader of the 18th and 19th century who wouldn't come off non-PC under those conditions. But if you judge Lincoln by the standards of his era then I suggest he comes off pretty well by comparison with his peers.

I mainly participate in these debates to defend our rights to honor our ancestors and our regional heritage, and to challenge the idiotic and destructive campaign to demonize the Confederacy, its leaders, and its soldiers. Because unless this is stopped, it's going to lead to some very bad national consequences later.

And I will state for the record, as I have in the past, that I honestly don't care if you want to honor your ancestors or your heritage. I think you should be free to honor them in your way. You want a confederate memorial day? Have at it. I don't live in the South so I don't get to say what holidays you celebrate. You want to fly your confederate flag? More power to you. Feel free to do it in peace and without any interference or comment from me. You want to honor your Southern heroes? Knock yourself out.

But you have your resons for being on these threads and I have mine. And my reason is that for oh so many of your Southron compatriots, celebrating your heroes and your heritage requires that you trash mine.

Here's the thing. My first post on this thread was to point out that there were principled people on both sides of the Civil War and that events needed to be viewed in light of the time in which they occurred. At no time did I attempt to demonize the south. It's produced many honorable men.

So an attempt to show respect to Confederate participants unleashed an hysterical insult-a-thon aimed at Yankees.

If there's a chasm, it wasn't constructed by only those damned Yankees.

Let me answer 410 for you and you jump in and tell me where I am wrong. Based on my interpretations of your postings:

You are a statist at heart and believe in the American Empire. You, with out a doubt believe in a top down, centralized government. You may want it to be a ‘conservative’ government as you might perceive conservative. However, the concept of decentralized government.(Free Republic) is an anathema to you. So even if the current Federal government gains more power and becomes more left wing, even to the point of communism, there is nothing you would do about it, because it’s Constitutional. If any state or group of states confederates, they are to be invaded and crushed, no matter the reason. The more brutally it’s done the better. No matter what the cost, the Union will and must be preserved. Any duly elected state legislature that contemplates secession is committing a crime against humanity, regardless of the will of the people of that state or there intended reason. Federal Authority over the states is supreme, this power can’t be negotiated with or threats to this power tolerated in any way.

At the close of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia on September 18, 1787, a Mrs. Powel anxiously awaited the results, and as Benjamin Franklin emerged from the long task now finished, asked him directly: "Well Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" "A republic if you can keep it" responded Franklin.
