Southerners looking to share their Confederate holiday
Hartford Courant ^ | March 22, 2009 | Dahleen Glanton

ATLANTA — In a cultural war that has pitted Old South against new, defenders of the Confederate legacy have opened a fresh front in their campaign to polish an image tarnished, they said, by people who do not respect Southern values.

With the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States in 2011, efforts are under way in statehouses, small towns and counties across the South to push for proclamations or legislation promoting Confederate history.

I will show southern FReepers the respect of saying that I don't think you're representative of the entire south of the Mason-Dixon line population. You're rather like the crazy uncle in the attic

If it makes you feel secure to think that then go ahead.

But I wouldn't take a poll if I were you................................

or if you'd be begging to immigrate to Dixie once your tax bill came due.

He'd come a running, tears running down his cheeks. Dixie, save me now!!!!

You want to judge Lincoln by the standards of our times then fine.

Why shouldn't he?

You Reb bashers are constantly judging the antebellum South by current standards.

Not much of a general. If he was any good he would have done some fighting to stop the mean Yankees instead of wasting time writing such a long letter. The rebs were always better talkers than fighters.

if the South was indeed a separate nation. If that was the case, the America in which you live would be a totally socialist nation by now.

Worth a bump.

It has been asked of you if you support the efforts of the states to reassert their constitutional authority.

Kansas is part of this...Are you going to turn against your own State? SCR1609 “[T]he State of Kansas hereby claims sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment

If & When this Federal Government suspends more of your rights are you...Going to defend your rights? Call honest Abe? Or just be a good Reb like us?

You may get that live History lesson on States rights after all!

Let's end this. I have one more bottom line question (my fifth bottom line but who is counting) Here goes, if it were to go down again, split roughly the same way. Would you join in on the Federal or the break away state(s) side? Choose now, It should be easy to answer because slavery has nothing to do with it now. Answer this and I leave you alone forever.

That's an easy question. If it split the same way I'd certainly stand with the federals, because the way it split in 1861 had all the Democrats, hotheads, non-productive and political idiots on the side of the Confederates.

The day is gonna come when the far left declares open war on the Founding Fathers, and eventually on all pre-PC American statesmen, such as Lincoln. When that day comes, I expect many of the Dixie-bashers here to capitulate immediately and join in the chorus declaring Washington, Madison, Lincoln, and others to be evil racists, sexists, and homophobes. But I expect others to have an epiphany. You know, the kind that some liberals get when they get mugged. They'll realize what a huge error they made ridiculing Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee for opposing racial equality when they're reminded that Washington, Madison, and even Lincoln opposed it, too. They're gonna have a hard time explaining to the black radical lesbian woman in charge of the U.S. Commission on Racial Diversity that Washington or Lincoln were acceptable racists since their racism was just a product of their time, while Davis & Lee were unacceptable racists notwithstanding the time in which they lived. At that point they'll realize what a terrible, terrible precedant they helped set when they joined the left in its crusade against Confederate heritage.

...Democrats, hotheads, non-productive and political idiots...

That sounds like a good description of the SPLC (or as some call it, the $PLC) and other anti-Confederate heritage hate groups.

your tired old Southron whine that anyone who disagrees with the rebel cause has got to be a liberal.

When you believe in a totalitarian central government, eliminating ideologies that don't agree with yours and the permanent, till the end of time compact with your precious union, then not only are you a liberal but, in actuality you would probably be quite cozy living in the old Soviet Union.

Yes NS, you and your ilk pretend to be 'conservatives' but it wouldn't surprise me a bit to find Obama yard signs in your garage.

And I’ll repeat. Had the confederacy not started the war then they wouldn’t have been shelled, blockaded, occupied or reconstructed. All the pain, all the suffering, all the misery that you keep whining about was entirely self-inflicted.

That might just be the most idiotic, moronic, stupidest thing that you've ever posted and that's saying something because almost everything you post on FR (I can't speak for your DU postings) is close to pegging the needle on the moron meter.

That is what a Free Republic means.

NS doesn't believe in a 'free' republic.

NS/yankees believe in permanent bondage.

I suspect that if NS's wife were to ask for a divorce he would clap the irons on her and throw her in the basement until she came to her senses.

And your Constitutional justification for that is...?

That's the NS philosophy in a nutshell. You (and yankees in general) would cheerfully go along with Hitler's gassing of millions of Jews if it were constitutionally justifiable.

Well when it comes to idiotic and moronic then who better than you would know?

Fact: no war, no invasion. Davis started the war, the South reaped the consequences of his actions.

Until you posted this I thought that NS had the most idiotic, stupidest, moronic post of all time but you've taken his crown.

The "Butcher" would have non of that silly peace talk...

On March 4, 1861, Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as President. In his inaugural address, he argued that the Constitution was a more perfect union than the earlier Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, but that the Articles had established the permanence of the Union in a binding contract. He called any secession "legally void"[4]. He stated he had no intent to invade Southern states, nor did he intend to end slavery where it existed, but that he would use force to maintain possession of federal property. His speech closed with a plea for restoration of the bonds of union.[5]

The South sent delegations to Washington D.C. and offered to pay for the federal properties and enter into a peace treaty with the United States.(surprised that wasn't deleted out by the fascist/federalists) Lincoln rejected any negotiations with Confederate agents on the grounds that the Confederacy was not a legitimate government, and that making any treaty with it would be tantamount to recognition of it as a sovereign government. However, Secretary of State William Seward engaged in unauthorized and indirect negotiations that failed.[6]
