DU Tactics at FreeRepublic
FreeRepublic | 4/3/07 | Reaganesque

Posted on 04/03/2007 7:24:18 PM PDT by Reaganesque

It is always disappointing to be reminded that there are people in the world who do not like you so much that they are willing to debase themselves and others in order to get their way. We, as conservatives face this from the Left on a day to day basis. But when such action comes from another supposed Conservative, that is truly disappointing.

The posters at DU think nothing of swearing and posting the most filthy, perverted and twisted things about their political rivals. We here at FR are, for the most part, better than that. At least we try to be. Unfortunately, there's always someone who proves that both sides have their ugly side.

I have posted a number of pro-Mitt Romney threads recently as have many others. I discovered this afternoon that several of them have been the victims of childish and down right purile dirty tricks. Now, political dirty tricks are nothing new and nor are they uncommon on either side of the aisle. But some simply cross the line of decency. Such is the case with whomever played their little game of messing with the Keywords on these Pro-Romney threads. Here are four examples:

Romney Tops Republicans in Fundraising
KEYWORDS: ANTICHRIST; CULT; FUNDRAISING; MITTRAPESCHILDREN; ROMNEY; Click to Add Keyword

Why I Think You Should Vote For My Dad
KEYWORDS: 2008; ELECTIONPRESIDENT; ELECTIONS; MITTBEATSHISKIDS; MITTISTHEANTICHRIST; ROMNEY; Click to Add Keyword

Parsing the Polls: Answering the Mormon Question

KEYWORDS: CULT; JOEYSMITHDELUSION; Click to Add Keyword

Romney-Thompson Ticket?

KEYWORDS: ELECTION; FRED; FREDTHOMPSON; MITTISTHEANTICHRIST; ROMNEY; THOMPSON; VP; Click to Add Keyword

People, campaigning can be a hard and painful thing. You have to have a thick skin to run for office and heaven knows, all candidates take their blows, some more than others. But there is such a thing as decency. And this little prank doesn't just cross that line, it obliterates it.

Disagree with the thread? Fine. Present your arguments. You don't like the candidate? Great. Tell me why and make an attempt at intelligent conversation. That's the way this place is supposed to work. But, resorting to such sophomoric, vulgar and quite frankly bigoted childishness is beneath contempt. If you can't manage a reasonable level of maturity, then there's a whole bunch of like minds over at DU you can have fun with.

...a DU troll, can add a keyword.

I suspect that this is may be the case in a number of instances.

And (call me paranoid) but I also suspect the likelihood that at least some of the nastiest bashing of potential candidates comes from DU (or perhaps DNC staffer) sleepers. I have nothing to base this suspicion upon except a distrust of left wing activists and politicos.

No, we're not better than that. Nor do we try to be.

I disagree. Every internet forum has at least some rude, crude and obnoxious people, but FR would win the cleanest posting award hands down compared to DU. Perhaps you've never logged on to DU. If you haven't, you should. I believe you'd find it rather enlightening. :)

You think that is bad? You should read the keywords on the Rudy threads and why this is my first post in awhile and might end up being my last post for a long time.

Now that other candidate supporters are getting a taste of what Rudy supporters have been going through, maybe someone will wake-up but I doubt it.

I cancelled my monthly donation and told them to take me off the monthly donor list because of the abuse — don’t donate to get trashed by Freepers that hate a candidate I support and are encouraged to say and do what they want against anyone that supports Rudy. Nothing happens to them while a Rudy supporter steps one inch out of bounds and are banned or threatened by other Freepers they will be banned. Not worth the time or trouble.

Thanks for bringing this to the attention of Freepers and wish you luck — not holding my breath though!

Yes, Rudy fans are kept busy in their own Rudy threads defending Rudy, but they take the time to sling plenty of trash about other candidates and being in a Rudy thread is the next best thing to reading a thread at DU.

Rudy supporters tend not to trash other candidate cuz were a cheery lot. We like all the candidates but we just prefer Rudy. If Rudy doesn't’t get the nod you'll we will find close ranks behind the nominee. What makes Rudy threads like DU is the fault of the RudyHaters.

Given that I had just noticed this a few hours ago, no, I have not posted any complaints about the treatment of other candidates here. However, if I see someone posting Keywords like “RUDYRAPESCHILDREN” or “MCCAINBEATSHISKIDS”, I will report that abuse immediately. As should you.

Hang on PKM, it is getting better, particularly with Fred Thompson hinting around.

It’s all good, and I’d miss you too much.

Thanks for posting this.

FR has all types, and often folks cross lines that they don’t even know exist, sometimes intentionally, sometimes otherwise, kneejerk reactions, who knows.

The Abuse button is your FRiend.

“KEYWORDSFROMDU” is my way of tipping people off to DUmmie keywording.

This reminds me of the evolution of politically correct language. The liberals have pressed upon the rest of us that you cannot use this word or you cannot use that word because it is offensive.

Words have meanings. Keywords have meanings. If people are offended by keywords, maybe they need to reread those words in a dictionary. A word, by itself, does not have a connotation, it has a definition.

In learning the definition, one is better able to converse and think. Thinking is a virtue, and one that should be encouraged. This should not be something that a thinking person cannot understand.

I would hope that this sort of hysterical censorship would be unheard of on FR.

FR is a private site, and can make its own rules. We’re not up “against” the First Amendment, here. Debate rules the roost, of course, but with voice and vote comes a modicum of personal responsibility. I think that what is being debated here.

It sure helps when those who have no respect for themselves much less others let it rip for all to see, well, those that do pay attention to keywords anyway.

It is the hysteria that I find strange. With all of the big issues before us, who cares if one person criticizes another’s candidate? Don’t the candidates criticize each other, don’t they even use “zingers” that people think are terrific?

FR is a private site, and will be run as Jim Robinson chooses. I have respect for that.

What I do not understand is why this keyword issue is important.

We’ve just STARTED this crazy election cycle that is artificially too long this time around. If we cannot see the bigger picture here, we’re going to get winded and not contribute to the push for conservatism.
