Many skeptics continue to question whether Rudy Giuliani is serious about making a run for the White House, but it was abundantly clear on Saturday that he had come to Manchester for more than the sub-freezing temperatures.
Addressing over 500 activists at the New Hampshire Republican Party's annual meeting as part of a two-day swing through the state, Giuliani sketched the broad outlines of what looks like a presidential run. Sounding at times like a motivational speaker, Giuliani cautioned against cynicism and pessimism in the wake of November's election results and challenges in the ongoing War on Terror. The message especially resonated with the audience in this critical primary state, where the Republican Party just lost control of both chambers of the legislature for the first time since the 1870s.
"The best way we remain safe and we retain our freedom...is remaining on offense, remaining strong and not becoming weak in a time of pressure," Giuliani said in a line that drew the biggest applause from the crowd at the Palace Theater.

Rudy wasn't part of the Reagan administration when he got the award, and none of the other recipients were part of the Reagan administration ever. How is what i said a strawman argument in any way, shape or form?
"I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, that it should remain that way, it should remain that way inviolate, and everything should be done to make sure that that's the case," Mr. Giuliani said in response to a reporter's question. "But I also believe that you should allow for the protection of legal rights for people who are gay and lesbian."
Absolutely. We cannot expect much from a candidate whose support is represented by an asterick. As my new tagline implies, conservatives need to become more pragmatic or run the risk of becoming politically irrelevant.
Oh, I didn't miss it. I completely disagreed with it, for the reasons stated.
The GOP lost the Reagan Dems in 2006 because they stopped acting like Reagan Republicans. You will not get them back with a "pragmatic" run further to the Rockefeller wing.
After leaving the Mayor of NY and putting space behing 9-11, he has come out for securing our borders and no path to citizenship for illegals. Someone accidentally mixed up his quote that he supports a path to citizens for "legal" immigrants and said he was for illegals become citizens and it went around the net. I don't have time until this evening but I will see if I can find the exact source of the comments.
This is not meant at you but to everyone. University of Oklahoma has banned wikipedia as a source for anything due to the large number of inaccuracies on that site in their write-ups.
Thank you Reagan Man. And my apologies for zinging you.
I like good natured ribbing but outright name calling needs to stop IMHO.
No one said that Rudy was part of the administration when he got the award. Clearly Reagan admired and trusted him or he wouldn't have had him in his administration.
So when you mention that Gorby got the award too but wasn't presidential material, it's a little ridiculous on your part, but maybe you specialize in that.
Not every guy puts forth a long-time associate and business associate for the lead anti-terror job in the country without vetting him first, only to see him go crashing down in flames a week later at considerable embarassment to the President.
The fact that you cannot tell the difference (or choose not to) between that and a lower-level aide getting nailed for Medicare fraud years after Reagan left office is striking.
Aha, thanks. I don't think I've ever seen posts completely nuked like that before.
OT: did you see the thread around here somewhere that says our COURT JUDGES are using Wikipedia for case source material?? I once added some relevant info to the Multiple Sclerosis entry - it was DELETED, though I sourced it, linked it, placed it in the correct spot, etc.
I'm with you there, Mo, and I may adopt your perspective when it comes to participation on FR until we actually get into 2008. I recently said on other threads that I had determined to swear by Reagan's "11th Commandment" -- "Thou shalt not speak ill of thy fellow Republican." Apparently, many on FR aren't willing to pledge allegiance to this aspect of Reaganism.
Last night, in an interview with Fox's Bill O'Reilly, Rudy Giuliani again put himself squarely in the presidents camp on immigration reform. The mayor is for tough border security, but he has also made the case in recent speeches that real reform must include a guest worker program and a path to citizenship. On Fox, Giuliani argued that comprehensive reform is not only practical but also aides in fighting crime and thwarting terrorists. Some highlights:
GIULIANI: Yes, yes. National Guard short-term solution makes a lot of sense. Increasing the border patrol.O'REILLY: In the long term.
GIULIANI: Long-term over a period of time would be the permanent way to do that.
But you've got to seal the border. And you've got to do it with personnel. And you've got to do it with technology. You've got to have both.
And we have to know who's in the United States. We need to have information about who's in this country. And then you have to have a way in which people can regularize themselves as well. I mean, you need to get people out from under the table.
O'REILLY: So you would give them a pathway to citizenship?
GIULIANI: I would say -- this is a classic thing where you've got to do both, carrot and stick.
O'REILLY: Yes, but you got to do -- I think the stick first.
GIULIANI: You've got to do both.
O'REILLY: You know, you stop it and then back.
When you were the mayor in New York, illegal immigration rose in this city tremendously. I mean, you can't get a cab now with an American in there.
GIULIANI: But crime declined immensely .
GIULIANI: The Immigration and Naturalization Service would only deport 1,500 to 2,000 a year. So I said to myself I have 398,00 illegal immigrants because the federal government is not going to do anything about this. It can't. So I had to figure out how do I deal with it so that I regularize them, so that I.O'REILLY: So how did you do that?
GIULIANI: They don't commit crimes. They don't - well, we made sure that their children were allowed to go to school for which we were criticized. But if I didn't do that, I would end up with children on the streets. If I had just said well, illegal immigrants can't have their children in school. And we tried to make their lives reasonable.
O'REILLY: How about city services?
GIULIANI: It would have been.
O'REILLY: Did you give them city money?
GIULIANI: Sure, we did. If they were necessary services. We allowed them, for example, to report crimes.
O'REILLY: Without being -- asked what their status was.
GIULIANI: Because we wanted the criminals who were committing the crimes.
O'REILLY: Right.
GIULIANI: A criminal can beat up an illegal immigrant today. He can beat you up tomorrow. So we need the.
O'REILLY: So you took the practical approach to it?
GIULIANI: But you've got to take a practical approach to it. There are 12 million illegals in this country. We got to stop illegals from coming in. And a tremendous amount of money should be put into the physical security that's needed to do that.
People and technology. At the same time, you've got this tremendous number of people who are below the table. As long as you don't know who they are, as long as you can't get them to come forward, you can't identify them, you can't photograph them, you have to figure out who they are, then you have a dangerous situation.
O'REILLY: It's interesting.
GIULIANI: Now terrorists can hide in that group.
O'REILLY: Oh, absolutely.
GIULIANI: And criminals can hide.
Oh, you're conveniently forgetting about some of Reagan's people who got in a boatload of trouble WHILE he was president. But no matter. You're a hopeless case anyway.
You have a good day doing what you do best - trashing all the candidates.
areafiftyone just made a post that contradicts you.

So now your side cannot even keep your own spin straight.
If you're interested in perpetuating your slash-and-burn approach to political discussion on FR, you're welcomed to it. I won't waste my time trying to refute every little petulent comment made by people who are hopelessly unable to see the big picture.
Rudy reaches out across the board especially to us small government conservatives who support the WOT and our defense as our #1 priority. Pat Robertson came out in support of Rudy as someone he can support. Guess he just got kicked out of the 'true' conservative group.
You see, uniting the one issue conservatives is not as important as getting the common sense conservatives who want to win in coalition with the rest of the Republicans, Indy's, and conservative Democrats who also place WOT and national security at the top of their lists along with smaller government. Social issues are not going to take center stage in this election -- the hand was overplayed and will not be the big issue because no President can get Roe v Wade overturned and sent back to the States where it belongs. Sorry to burst your bubble but there are many Republicans who are also Conservative that don't put abortion even close to the top of their list when looking at a candidate. Bill Bennett was one in his list.
YOU are the one who made the comparison to a specific aide.
And I see you have promptly gone back to bashing Reagan after praising him for hiring Rudy.
Yeah, that held the GOP majority in 2006 /sarcasm.
Social issues are not going to take center stage in this election
Ignore them at your own peril. At least Mitt understands the need to move right. You and Rudy don't.
Sorry to burst your bubble but there are many Republicans who are also Conservative that don't put abortion even close to the top of their list when looking at a candidate. Bill Bennett was one in his list.
I would suggest Rudy do a poll to see how criticial the social issues are for holding the party together.
The President is changing his stance as if you didn't know!
