Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County
Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.
Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
You must remember these were young boys. Not high school age boys.
The boys in Colorado who left the girls behind were older.
Those were my thoughts exactly. I keep thinking back to what poor Emily Keyes suffered before her tragic death, and it's just so horrible...
But they are still boys. Why only keep girls?
Re: the list. OMG! That is hard to fathom. A change of clothes? A bucket???
It seems he lost his nerve, thank God.
He mentioned a grudge to his wife. My guess would be that some girl bested him at something once and embarrassed him. There are other reasons these nutcases go after females, too...
Honestly, I am disgusted just posting it. I don't even know how to respond about or talk about it. I am speechless. I actually feel bad about posting it, even though it is 'factual'. Maybe it went over the edge.
Yeah, I saw the list. I don't even want to think about it. I'm glad the cops responded so fast. He probably didn't figure they had access to a phone.
He wanted to kill a lot of people and get away. The tools, change of clothes, and black powder all support that hypothesis. What's conspicuously missing from the list are the flex-cuffs or wire ties that we know he had.
I know what you mean. This has to be one of the worst things that's ever happened, and it seems the more information comes out, the sicker and more evil it gets.
I don't think your post went over the edge--we need to understand what happened. It seems to me that's the only chance we have to prevent something like this in the future, although from what I gather from the experts on CNN, that is difficult, because the recent trend is outsiders going into a school. It's not the same thing as a student doing it, where the teachers/parents, etc. have a chance to observe behavioral changes.
Anyway, it's my birthday and my family wants me to stop freeping. :) Take care.
It would seem the ills of our modern world are fast encroaching upon the Amish way of life. One hopes it will not be forced into extinction.
I dated a woman from Ephrata (I think that's how it's spelled).
Prayers for all the victims and the perps family. I hope people can seperate the criminal from the family and let them grieve in peace, as well.
Please extend our prayers to them. This is unimaginable to all of us, just heartbreaking.
And another family who must be in agony tonight- here is a statement from the wife of the killer:
A family friend of Charles Carl Roberts, the 32-year-old man accused of shooting students at an Amish school in Bart, Pa. Monday, read the following statement from Roberts' wife on News 8:
"The man that did this today was not the Charlie I've beenmarried to for almost 10 years. My husband was loving, supportive and thoughtful -- all the things you'd always want and more. He was an exceptional father. He took the kids to soccer practice and games, played ball in the backyard and took our 7-year-old daughter shopping. He never said no when I asked him to change a diaper. Our hearts are broken, our lives shattered and we grieve for the innocent lives that were lost today. Above all, please pray. Pray for the families who lost children today. Please pray to for our family and children."

The Amish School is located just outside Nickel Mines, PA in Lancaster County, PA.
That poor woman. What on earth made this man descend into the pit of hell on Earth like he did today?
At one point it was stated that they found a backpack belonging to him, and cleared out the school. I suppose this is what was left inside the backpack, in addition to the weapons. I don't know however why they would leave out the ties and flex-cuffs.
Find Lancaster on a map. Follow Route 30 eastbound for a few miles. It will intersect Route 896.
896 runs about four miles south to Strasburg. It then heads east a mile or so along with Route 741 and then turns off to the ESE for about five miles until it hits the small town of Georgetown.
Just before 896 reaches Georgetown, a road comes in from the north. That is Mine Road. The school is a short distance up that road.
Well said, thank you so very much.
Prayers for them.
