Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

Oh my. I hope they persuaded him that it would be best to just help others get out the window. With atttudes like this you can see why the boys dismissed though. They may never have to use it, but do girls need to be thinking offensive too? I'm beginning to think so.

I'm glad I missed it, too. But knowing it happened still bugs the heck out of me.

I'm praying for God to be with these families. This is too awful to comprehend.

That photo does not even begin to capture the innocence lost here. I drove through Bart Township on a long commute for a year. It is where I first realized the Amish will use a weed-whacker when I saw an old Amish man with a long silver beard and black hat using one to trim his front yard (I almost went into a bar ditch when I saw that). It is IMO the most typical and beautiful Amish township in Lancaster County because it has escaped the tourism just to its north. I saw kids walking to school every day as well as pushing scooters along (I guess they can have scooters but not bikes). The boys had straw hats and variously colored shirts, the girls had bonnets and dresses. Thye all carried small Igloo coolers with their lunches that their mothers had prepared for them.

All the kids exuded the kind of glow so often missing from the kids I see moping around suburbs. It was the glow of children allowed to be children - they worked hard but also got to play hard in an environment that doesn't exist any longer in the sophisticated world.

And now that has been shattered by a hammer blow of evil that is beyond human comprehension. I am physically sick seeing all this. It is a reminder that sometimes evil comes forth and thumbs its nose at us just to tell us that it still exists under the surface in places you least expect it.

That's one of the things that makes absolutely no sense, but then what of any of this makes sense... No matter what happened to him in his childhood it is no excuse whatsoever for this behavior. I understand though -- wanting to know why...

The girls in this community go deer hunting, also. It's very close knit and I could see them banding together to protect eact other. This is Upstate NY.

This guy walked into a one-room school building armed with two handguns and a shotgun. Facing pregnant women or women carrying infants. If the teacher would have had a gun and gone for it, it would have been futile and could have increased the death toll if the perp simply started firing at that point.

He picked a school in a community of non-violent pacifists.

He could be certain that nobody around was armed, had any martial arts expertise, had any military training, nor the mindset of dealing with sudden savage violence. He picked his target carefully, in that he wanted to be absolutely certain of no resistance.

That is an absolutely horrific list... What in the world were his plans -- forget it, I don't even want to think about it.

We were in this area (but not this town) this summer. The thing that cracked me up was a horse drawn hay baler with a gasoline engine on it to power the baler.

We were told that scooters were OK and bicycles were not because you can travel faster on a bicycle than you can on a horse.

Also, it was OK for them to ride in a motor vehicle as long as they paid for the ride.

I expected the Amish to be reclusive and shy, but they were employed in many businesses we visited and were extremely friendly and polite, though a bit reserved.

It's hard to imagine such a horrific event befalling these private people.

I got the list from one of your links. I hesitated before posting it because all of us are already too disgusted right now.

For the most part, yes, but some Amish boys were recently convicted of repeatedly raping their younger sister for years. Shows you that evil exists everywhere. Sad.

In a way I'm glad you did post it though. Somehow we've got to convince those that would deny these type of people exist that they really are out there.

I've seen quite a few of those. I gather that as long as the propulsion is not from engines it is OK. They also have very bizzare-looking threshers with gasoline engines. They also seem to have no problem with pesticides - I've seen them with horse-drawn sprayers.

But the manure spreaders are still fair-sized tankers pulled by horses. Whenever I saw a field up ahead painted dark brown, I knew I was in for an olfactory delight when I got there.

Maybe their quick slaying because of the police showing up was more merciful than what would have awaited them if he had time. That list gives me the chills.
