Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

You need to back up a bit and read the thread.

The moderators have ruled out ALL posts assigning blame to the adults or the cops. No exceptions.

An adult does not leave little girls with an obviously crazy man with a gun. One does not do that. Ever.

If you had a gun in your car, would you leave them alone long enough to go get it?

If you didn't have a gun in your car, would you leave long enough to go get someone you knew did?

Is it better to stay with the kids and know that nobody will know and no help will come or leave and know help would come?

These are hard decisions. Your blanket statement may not necessarily apply to all hard situations. But it sounds good.

they are one of the most insulated societies in the world.

Not true. The Amish set themselves apart and have different customs, but they know and deal with their neighbors, sell their produce at local markets, vote, pay taxes, and probably shop at Wal-Mart. They largely keep to themselves, but there are a lot more insular groups in Pennsylvania, let alone the US, let alone the wide world.

I can't read freepatriot's comments because they've been deleted. But your comments quote him as typing:

another reason to homeschool ping

My guess is that he was simply alerting me to this thread because "another reason to homeschool" is the name of the ping list I run.

I try not to use the actual name of our list on school shooting threads, like this one. But it's just the name of our list. I suspect everyone reacted too quickly in response to freepatriot, who was probably just alerting me to the story.

I must say, though, that these school shootings convince me that no school is safe. As I commented in another post above, these monsters could start targeting homeschool groups, but they probably don't know where we are, and they don't know if we're armed or not. Obviously, they have no trouble targeting children, whenever possible, as this horrible story tells us. My heart breaks for all of the children... and the adults killed, too.

You have time to do an update? I just got home. We have an Amish freeper here. I can't remember his name but he posts some humorous stuff. Has anyone heard from him?

I would never leave innocent children alone with a gunman. I would put my soul in God's hands at that time, but I would not, could not leave them.

How many times have you had a gun pointed at you by a madman?

"An adult does not leave little girls with an obviously crazy man with a gun. One does not do that. Ever."

Yes, they do. We don't know what he said to them, we don't know what was in the minds of those "adults". Perhaps they thought they were doing the right thing not to make this man angry, or maybe he said everyone leave or I will start killing all the kids. Maybe, they thought saving some was better than losing all.
No one knows what they would do!

Very true! My understanding is Amish people don't watch tv, have electricity - lead sheltered lives.

How could they even fathom the Evil that was upon them - never mind "know" what to do .

Well said. I'm beyond words and what you said touched my heart. Thank you.

Praying for our country and her people, for evil walks amongst us. Lord, hear our prayers. In Jesus name, amen.

Thats very easy to say from the armchair. But there are situations where you would have to make a liar out of yourself. I can think of a few where it would be incredibly stupid to stay.

I would have reached into my arsenal and started blasting holes in the guy. Unless there was a power failure. In which case, I'd take a bubble bath, and start the game over when the electric comes back on.
