"They had all of these events planned including wonderful meals for employees," says Lobna Ismail( an American-born Muslim woman of Egyptian descent), president of Connecting Cultures, a Maryland-based consulting firm that develops corporate-training programs. "The only problem was that it was all scheduled during the work days [during Ramadan] and most of the Muslims were fasting and couldn't enjoy any of it."

Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the United States and the number of Muslims in the work force will continue to increase. A basic understanding of Islam and its religious and cultural practices, including Ramadan, which will begin this weekend, can help smart companies keep loyal employees and avoid legal pitfalls.
