Free Republic is currently running a poll on this subject:
Do you think creationism or intelligent design should be taught in science classes in secondary public schools as a competing scientific theory to evolution? You can find the poll at the bottom of your "self search" page, also titled "My Comments," where you go to look for posts you've received.
I don't know what effect -- if any -- the poll will have on the future of this website's science threads. But it's certainly worth while to know the general attitude of the people who frequent this website.
Science isn't a democracy, and the value of scientific theories isn't something that's voted upon. The outcome of this poll won't have any scientific importance. But the poll is important because this is a political website. How we decide to educate our children is a very important issue. It's also important whether the political parties decide to take a position on this. (I don't think they should, but it may be happening anyway.)
If you have an opinion on this subject, go ahead and vote.
Um, is that what it means to "freep" a poll? I just thought it was a call to freepers to go vote once. Perhaps you meant to say the poll could be DUmmed?
Not sure what you are requesting. You want to see the definitions list again???? Several times????
;-)
I don't think it's spam. I think it's a valuable contribution to people who just do NOT understand (or who stubbornly ignore) the meaning of the word "theory" in the context of math and science. They think it means "conjecture," or speculation, a notion how or why something may or may not have happened. That's NOT what "theory" means in the scientific sense or in the mathematical sense. Coyoteman can't post this stuff enough, if you ask me. I love the evolution threads because they are so educational, and Coyoteman is an excellent source of info. I believe in God and I accept evolutionary theory. The two are NOT exclusionary. Refusal to see that they are is based solely on human pride.
Thanks for the ping. I share the same views as you. I also concur with a newer member's view that ID could, perhaps, be introduced as a part of a philosophy curriculum.
If we teach creationisim, I want to make sure we are taught that a giant monster eats the sun and the moon during an eclipse.
I never had a philosophy course in high school. I don't know how many public schools have such courses. No problem with me if it's included in such a course. However, it's been demonstrated rather conclusively that what's called ID today is really just a disguised form of creationism. That got spelled out quite clearly in the Dover litigation: Kitzmiller et al. v Dover Area School District et al.
Whatever ID may be, it's not yet science. They don't do research, they don't publish any results in scientific journals. Biotech firms don't hire ID researchers -- and they would if they thought anything could come of such work. The ID people don't have anything scientific to show for all their public relations efforts. If ID ever develops into a science, I think it should be in a science class. Until then, it's just an idea -- a lovely idea, but not science.
You are of course, referring to Helen Thomas!
Please...no pics necessary.
As they have been in all other polls.
Agreed, also with the rest of your comment. I'm just in an expansive mood tonight.
Opening new business so I'm stoked!
I don't believe the FR is a Libertarian site.
It seems this poll is pretty darn accurate, which is surprising given it's been done on the web.
But then again, it's not all that surprising that freeper opinion would mirrow broader GOP opinion. We pro-science conservatives have our work cut out to make our party the voice of reason once again.
Long road ahead.
/hmm. maybe I'm not being nice
//Oh well. Nobody's perfect.
At the moment, 33% of registered freepers are voting "No." That is, to keep creationism and ID out of science class. I wish it were more, but I'm pleasantly surprised that a third of freepers are of that opinion. Well, maybe I shouldn't be surprised. My pro-evolution ping list is one of the biggest lists on this website, currently pushing close to 400 names. There are bigger lists, but the evo list is one of the biggies. Or so I'm told.
Do you believe the theory of evolution is an important topic for the advancement of conservative principles?
Yes
No
Undecided
Not worth discussing
The current poll is a very narrow window of interest for most FReepers.
I'd rather vote for Nancy Pelosi as Queen of the USA than let you have any say in how I educate my children.
