It appears that the Northern invasion of the South is complete -- at least it is on a patch of land known as Delta Plantation in Jasper County.
There, a diehard rebel named Henry E. Ingram Jr. made his last stand against the onslaught of Yankees, only to be thwarted by a man from Long Island, N.Y., and now -- gasp -- a French Canadian.
Ingram promised to keep Yankees out of Delta Plantation in Jasper County when he bought 1,700 acres there in 1998. His resolve to keep them out still is strong, but the covenants he put on the land don't seem to have any teeth.
Those covenants did, however, scare Canadian-raised Bluffton resident Louise Legare a bit as she was close to signing a contract to buy a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house on the land from Bluffton Home Builders.
The list of rules she got from the builders was missing the first pages, so she went to the Jasper County Courthouse to get the missing ones. There, she found the covenants, or rules, that Ingram demanded of buyers:
1. They could not be Yankees.
2. They could not have the last name Sherman (an obvious reference to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman).
3. And the land could not be sold or leased to those whose last names could be rearranged to spell Sherman.
Clearly, Ingram doesn't like Northern folk.
Now, however, Legare and Bluffton Home Builders are working with Ingram's son, Ashley Ingram, to remove the covenants. The former Delta Plantation is on both sides of U.S. 17, just north of the Georgia state line.
"When (Legare) brought it to us, we all kind of had a good laugh," said Jim Hobbs, a partner in the home-building firm.
In fact, Legare is buying the land and home from Bill Cook, another partner in the company, who happens to be a native of Long Island, N.Y. No one at Bluffton Home Builders had seen the covenants before Legare found the missing pages, and no one has ever tried to enforce them, Hobbs said.
If Henry Ingram had his way, he still would keep Yankees off of the 1,700 acres he once owned. His holdings on the plantation have dwindled to 10 acres.
Ingram, now a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas, said his son and attorney, who are both local, should be looking out for his anti-northerner wishes now.
"Yankees destroy everything they have up North, then they come down here," Ingram said. "When they destroy everything (in the South), where are they going to move next? Another country?"
Legare, who grew up north of Montreal, figures her far-northern upbringing must be especially abhorrent to Ingram.
"I must be more of a Yankee," she said. "I'm the person he really doesn't want to live there."
Amazingly, Legare is a much better choice to own Southern land than a New Yorker, according to Ingram.
"French people are much better and more desirable than a Yankee," said Ingram, who once owned video-poker casinos in Jasper County. "They don't stick their noses in other people's business."
The same feature drew Legare and Ingram to the land -- nature. Ingram said he's seen Carolina panthers, bald eagles and fox squirrels on the land. It is that quiet beauty Legare is after.
"I was raised in a very nature-like environment," Legare said. "I think the nature is beautiful in South Carolina."
Ingram, who says he is leaving Texas for Costa Rica soon, cites the boorish manners of Yankees as one of his prime dislikes for them.
"They look down their little pointy noses at the people in the South because we are polite and nice to them," Ingram said. "They think people who are polite and nice are dumb."

You do kind of flit all over with how the war began.
You are pretty steady on how it has to be Lincoln's fault, but then you blame the starting of the shooting on an unarmed supply ship, the Citadel Cadets, and who knows what else.
So, do you want Bush to surrender when unelected Al Queda decides they want half the US to run his own way?
If not, what is your definition of the appropriate time when the President should surrender to a local tinpot dictator? Should he surrender half the country, just a few states, or the whole thing?
Inquiring minds want to know.
that "term of abuse" was coined by "morris dees, the SHYSTER-in-chief" of the so-called "southern poverty law center" SOLEY to be INSULTING (dees has admitted that his specific intent was to INSULT southerners.)to ALL of the people of dixie (or at least those of us, who despise his LEFTIST/anti-Christian/amoral/secular humanist views. that is about 95+% of southerners!)
fwiw, the BIGOT/fool/class clown = "m.eSPINola" has ADMITTED that HIS INTENT too is to INSULT our dixie people.
as for me, call me "PALEO-Confederate" if anything. fwiw, i'm a member of one of the "old rebel families", who have not forgotten, NOR will ever forget, how sweet it was to have a FREE dixie republic for 4 years.

My silly question is how could you remember? How old are you?
My understanding is the Jeff Davis didn't want to secceed, and planned his war to not succeed. (Pun intended). As such, he is as much a father of the war as Lincoln. He managed to get a fairly large part of the south restored to the Union in only 4 years, a notable achievement.
he also, in his prior service screwed up the statue on top of the capitol (he didn't hold with the phrygian cap of liberty) and was rather important in the Gasden Purchase. The latter added to what are now the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and by some accounts, a tiny part of Texas.
After his death, his wife became the best of friends with Mrs. Grant. A good example to us all.
the rest of the country should let ANY state/states "go in peace", whenever that state/group of states FREELY CHOOSES to leave the union.
fwiw, you & i may just live to see Los Estados Unidos de Azatlan leave the union by free vote & become a Spanish-speaking, predominently Roman Catholic, independent country. (my guess is, about 20 years from now, the states of AZ,CA CO,OR NM,NV & WA will "vote with their feet".)
assuming that that occurs, and YOU are POTUS, how many MILLION innocents will YOU, Mr. President, CHOOSE TO KILL rather than lose SEVEN of the fifty states of the USA??? (inquiring minds want to know.)

If a state was to decide to leave, who would determine the terms? The state, or the fed? Or would we fight over the terms? Is there any federal supremacy in your mind?
No, actually you have talked about how POOR the census figure were without offering a shred of hard documentation to back up your claims. I've found nothing that supports the claim that the census figures were so far off. If we figure that at least half of all free blacks of military age enlisted, a percentage probably higher than their white counter parts, then for "Professor" Blackerby's claims, assuming he actually made them, to be correct for every free black male of military age that the census counted it must have missed 10 to 12. You actually want us to believe that the population of the U.S. was closer to 360 million than 30?
Well sure. They couldn't very well put all those cooks and teamsters and servants and laborers in separate units by themselves, could they? Who would slop the mules and wash the mess if they did?
SORRY that you don't like the TRUTH, but the TRUTH is the TRUTH!
And when has the TRUTH! ever been found in one of your posts?
ROTFLMAO
Glory? Well I'm not aware of any other who had a movie made about them, but black regiments served on most fronts and performed sterling service, even if they didn't get the credit the 54th did. They were at Olustee, Poison Spring, Plymouth, the Crater, as you well know since the south executed so many black prisoners at those battles. They made up whole divisions in the Army of the Potomac.
You'll find that you will hear a lot of things for the first time in one of stand's posts. He has a most fertile imagination although Ms. Shwerin is starting to come close.
Terms???? TERMS????? They don't need no stinkin' terms! In the southeron mindset the only people with any rights and who are due any constitutional protections were those in the South. The rest of the country didn't have any.
Well your pun was wasted on watie, but in any event I have to disagree with you. Davis was a supporter of secession, and was actually angling for appointment as Secretary of War or Commanding General of the army. He was nobody's first choice for president.
Stand's spell-check is obviously working as well as his shift key.
If you had a credible record of it, sure.
But, you missed my point. You posted to Ruth that you 'knew' that Lincoln 'never' said the 'bringing the South to her knees' line.
So, whereas Ruth may not be able to prove the quote, you can only accurately state that there is not a record of Lincoln saying this but the only proof you could possibly muster that he 'never' said those words is if you were with Abe 24/7 and heard every word that he uttered during this period.
Get it?
Anytime, sweetheart.
And the Father of Centralized Government.
