Bush will win on Immigration to save the Republican Party.

Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.

Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.

The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You can’t stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.

FReepers can’t will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we can’t put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.

Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans won’t do for the prevailing wage.

So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.

So what?

Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.

It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.

Bush won’t let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You won’t win, you can’t win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.

We lost this one.

Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.

The higher reason that few seem to understand is that it's really all about a new Hemispheric Government, of which America will be the strong man, but one solitary unit just the same. And kiss what's left of a sovereign, Constitutional Republic into the kamode.

90% of posters are telling you, you are DEADWRONG. This is not a great discussion. You're on the wrong side of this issue and being given the ultimate FReeper smackdown. Look at the results of the current FR poll question. Public opinion isn't quite that high, but FReepers and Americans in general are in agreement on this one.

What are you saying? That because I dont hold the majority view, that mine is not valid? Horse puckey!

My views are MY views, not those assigned to me by the majority. Were it 99.9%, I would feel exactly the same. Rest assured I am not trembling in the face of opposition. I think people like Lincoln and Churchill understood that the prevailing view aint always the right one. (Disclaimer: Pukin Dog does not hold himself to be in the same company as Lincoln or Churchill) LOL.

Apparently you didn't read this.

In post Civil War America, politicians wanted to amend the Constitution to address injustices to the black slaves. The 14th Amendment was intended to provide citizenship to those that had endured slavery. The Amendment states in part, "all persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States..." Unfortunately too many self serving politicians and advocates for illegal immigrants ignore an important phrase in the Amendment. That phrase is "and subject to the jurisdiction thereof."

It has nothing to do with illegal aliens flooding our country across open borders. It has been twisted to fit the 'come in, all are welcome to the one world society'. BS. It was never meant for what we have today.

Well, there really isn't that much difference in our point of view, except that you choose such volatile rhetoric. You are probably right that the cost would be less. However, acting like you don't care about the welfare of the chidren is a losing issue politically. The liberals already have the talking points printed where they accuse the Republicans of creating millions of immigration orphans, splitting families and causing undue hardship. The TV networks will have daily tear-jerk stories about families being split up...with beautiful children with big sad eyes staring into the cameras.

I honestly think that we need to think about ALL the complications of each aspect of this issue, and play this smart. Despite the rightness of one's cause, one can lose on the PR front and thus lose the battle.

For the same reason I've yet to fathom about why islamist leave their country and come here for freedom, then try and destroy it to make it more like the country they escaped from in the first place. Illogical.

I'm not a Republican, even though I've voted straight Republican for a long, long time.

At this point, I have not qualms whatsoever about NOT voting Republican, and I intend to vote third party.

Screw 'em. They had their chance and they BLEW it! It's time to send a message. We want a CONSERVATIVE government.

Bingo! There was a purpose for the amendment that does not - or should not - apply today. The difference is that the slaves were NOT here voluntarily like illegals.

This is a point that I wish more could understand. This is an issue that could put us back in the minority for another 20 years. We do not need to generate the same kind of irrational disdain for Republicans among Latinos like that among Blacks. Bush wont let it happen during his term, but after that, who knows. If it does, we will deserve what we get. I just hope Bush has another chance to put someone on the Supreme Court, before the less rational among us toss our majority out the window.

It's all about winning is basically saying you are political party animal, not someone who cares about issues or principles.
