NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Praising India's expanding economy, President Bush warned Friday that fears about job outsourcing to other nations should not prompt the United States to limit global trade. "It's ... important to remember that when someone loses a job it's an incredibly difficult period for the worker and their families," Bush said in a speech in New Delhi. "It's true that some Americans have lost jobs when their companies move their operations overseas," he said. "Some people believe the answer to this problem is to wall off our economy from the world through protectionist policies. I strongly disagree."

I'm waiting, come explain this statement to us hicks.
what he should have said, is that the availabilty of low cost global labor pools - destroys what would be the normal investment in automation and invention to improve worker productivity. if a company wants to cut down on their software development costs - they invest in software tools for higher levels of automation. if a company needs higher productivity in call center operations, they invest in automated natural language call center operations.
but the availability of low cost offshore labor, destroys that. its easier to ship US operations offshore, then to invest to make them more productive at home. as a result, the US loses jobs, and loses the investment and jobs that would come from investments in productivity.
its a lose-lose.
And then what? There will be no demand for engineers in the United States? I suppose that is possible; but it is also possible that we will be hit by a giant asteroid.
My guess is that the practice of engineering will change in ways we cannot imagine, but good engineers will continue to be in demand for the next few centuries at least. Unless that asteroid wipes us out first.
Of course not. I'm not against progress. I'm in an industry that has held out against it but is being face with the inevitability of it. I keep thinking about the Model T. Sure, there was a bigger margin per unit building one car at a time, but the Model T was inevitable. I'm OK with that: I encourage my associates to rise to the challenge, adapt, embrace the change, focus on the real function of our business (serving a market), and find the opportunities in the change.
But, as you pointed out, the costs of labor have exacerbated the problem here. And you will forgive me for failing to mention the enormous "regulatory overhead" that any business here must overcome just to keep the lights on; and what about all the legal risk that comes from daring to have an attachable asset?
its going to become a niche profession in the US, and a profession for engineering managers. that's what's going to be left - the top schools like MIT producing cutting edge graduates, and others in the field had best include an MBA as part of their science degrees, if they want jobs where they don't have to compete with workers in India and China.
I'm in the Service Trades, and outsourcing has no effect on me. I am though sympathetic with the issue of outsourcing.
That said, I'm all for lessening the desire of "foreigners" to madly scramble to the United States ONLY for economic gain, and not for assimilation into American society.
Let all the creepy folk stay in their habitat, instead of making a mockery of Our Founding Father's vision of The Constitution.
Come on, I'm waiting. Spew some more insults and let's throw down.....troll. And try the spell check function, it makes stupid people look less stupid.
Why? Are engineers the only ones who are ever laid off?
Amen!
Yeah here we go again.
I can see where attacking someone on a personal basis, really makes you look intelligent.
Oh, the ALL CAPS was a nice touch.
The fact remains Johnnie boy, middle class jobs are going overseas and nothing is replacing them except for Illegal Aliens.
ArneFufkin is that you?
What's a "real day's work"...digging ditches?
You bet. Digging ditches and driving postholes will get you $9.00-$13.00 an hour, plus $15.00 an hour for the translator. What are they paying at McDonalds.....?
Few would believe that NAFTA and GATT are part of a dark plot to emasculate the greatest strength of America - its middle class.
Few will believe that there are even republicans engaged in this plot, just look at our borders.
We are like frogs being slowly boiled...and its already too late to jump out of the pot.
The adversarial game being played between the liberals and conservatives serves to keep our eyes off of the obvious. This "punch and judy" show keeps conservatives clueless and set up for coming events.
Yes the Globalists are in control and we on the Right lack organization and proper intelligence to act in a concerted manner...thereby giving the globalists free reign.
They are making the constitution worthless and will someday persecute christians and patriots.(it's beginning don't you see it?) Political Correctness isn't an attitude it's a bought and paid for policy and tool of the globalists.
In the mean time we argue and rant over the dangers of the Dems/socialists....having been sucked into the game being played upon America.
The Movie "The Matrix" comes to mind.
May God Help Us!!!
Don't take my reply out of context. Look at the post I was replying to.
I have NO idea what the pay at McDonald's. Do you?
But, is a job at McDonald's NOT real work, too?
Ditch diggers, in America, need a translator?
The same Free Traders who always claim it's not the government's responsibility to protect domestic jobs have no problem with that same government helping corporations find cheaper labor abroad. Apparently the word hypocrisy doesn't exist in their dictionary.
It's all real work, but it kills me to see pimply faced white kids at McDonalds making $4.00 an hour when they could be busting butt and hauling in twice as much...times change I guess.....
