Bush is caught in the middle.
He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.
He has to look tough on this to maintain relations with the Arabs but the congress doesn't.

"That leads me to think, like you, that there's something deeply serious and entirely confidential going on here. Could it have to do with some kind of surprise military action planned against Iran???" I doubt that very much. Wouldn't it have been a lot easier to just compensate Dubai directly for their allowing us to use their land as a base of air operations against Iran?
I just don't see this as being good for America. It's hard enough to keep terrorists out of our country, we don't need to pay a pro-terrorist, Arab muslim country from the middle east to help us handle port security on our eastern seaboard. It's insanity.

Does anyone remember Alito's first vote which made him a liberal for a day? Actually yes but it wasn't landmark enough to cause concern. We'll have to wait to see where he goes when cases like abortion start coming up.

It is hardly a gamble that Democrats will hop in the trap. They always do. Every year before the next election, it is also always a safe bet that FReepers will go crazy trying to figure out what Bush is up to, yet after the next victory he gets no credit.

Would this be his first veto ever? I don't understand why he wants to drive away a large percentage of his base with this decision.Because he's confident that they'll slavishly vote for McCain in 2008.

You mean that point about you not knowing the difference between Dubai and Yemen? Damn, don't make it EASY for me! Muslims are Muslims are Muslims and the majority of Muslims in the world hate you and me and want us dead. Just more proof to me that many Americans on both sides of the aisle do not understand a) why we are fighting and b) how much we need to fight using every resource available to us. I used to just think it was Dems that did not understand.

As for the talk of impeachment and Bushing bashing, the latter is par for the course here everyday. It's the oxygen for some posters. That's sad. I get called a Bushbot one day and a Bush Basher the next. It's never about having an independant opinion. And I can have one that differes from Bushs' without calling the Pres names.
I love FR because of all the researchers and info but truly cringe because of the anger.

The obvious conclusion is that this is part of some backroom horsetrading and deals going on to advance the War On Terror.False.
We already have some deal with the UAE. Why can't they settle for that?
You are aware that their government OWNs the DWP?
Anyways, if there were a legitimate explanation, this is what closed sessions are for.
And guess what, even then your thesis is improper.
No horsetrading justifies putting us at risk this way.
The guy is not seeing the forest for the trees. He is rationalizing as mere unessential or "manageable" details vital considerations to national security that in fact are essential, and already provably not being managed.

Bush is right.
The port thing is nativist drivel.
Cynical reasons include standing up to Congress is helpful in off year elections.
I think it also helps his public standing internationally. I have not seen any thoughtful explanation of how this foreign company specifically allows terror attacks. It is pure reactionary emotions regarding an Arab country.

Gives new meaning to "Payback is a bitch!"
Bush made a promise to UAE regarding WOT and now he has to pay the piper. Keeping that promise comes at enormous costs.
He loses even his hardiest supporters on this one.

While at the same time, the fact that Arabs operate most of the ports that our Navy Ships dock in when overseas will go right over their heads.
I remember one of our naval ships being blown up and almost sunk at one of these ports...
