He can veto federal legislation that would block the deal. He shouldn't, but he can.

Well, you asked for a response:

This deal was approved by a committee of the highest order. Condoleeza Rice, Don Rumsfeld, and John Snow were members. This committee has made decisions of this type for a long time.

This is a management firm. It is not responsible for port security. That is the domain of DHS.

The UAE has worked with us in the war on terror, and is one of the most secular of all Moslem nations. I don't believe that Britain is any better at shielding us from nuts anymore than Dubai would.

Dubai Ports already operates ports in Australia, Germany, China, India, and South America. I would think that Australia is as concerned as much on port security as anyone.

The fact that Chuck Schumer is the driving force behind this uproar should send conservative's red flags up immediately. Chuck Schumer doesn't give a damn about the nations security. Just look at his positions on any thing else.

The reason the Dems are in an uproar about this is that is a chance to increase union influence in the ports. Nothing would make them happier than to federalize the ports and make sure all the employees are union.

Having said all this, I do not care if this deal is scrutinized. I just don't want to advance the Dems agenda at our expense. I also do not want to punish one of the few allies we have in the middle east for no reason.

Jack Cafferty: "If this goes through, then this nation deserves what it gets."

I still think Cafferty is full of used food.

Despite this, I want to know what the hell the White House is smoking...

Could you please tell us what the plan is behind allowing tens of millions of illegals to come over the border since Bush was sworn in? I mean, ever action by Bush is supposed to be a very calculated brilliant masterful just short of godlike play that will be revealed in time.

Well, I've waited long enough on the border. I'm not going to accept the brilliance beyond my understanding explanation for this port fiasco. In my favorite daddy Bush impression, "Not gonna do it. Nope, not gonna do it."

Thanks Dana for the temporary license.

Port security as EVERYONE in the whole world now knows is less than acceptable given that only 5% of cargo is scrutinized. That leaves "management" to pick up the slack.

If you really want to get into it, Port Security is a joke period. 2% of containers get inspected. TWO PERCENT. Whether or not it's an American, or British or UAE compant managing the port is moot. The containers are still loaded in foreign ports.

Its physically impossible to inspect every container coming to the US, and frankly way too late if a bomb does get loaded on a ship, and is detonated before it is even subject to a 2% chance of being inspected.

The only good and sane defense in this case is a good offense, which is just another reason why Islamist terrorism needs to be taken on overseas.

It will be far easier for terrorists to get completed materials abroad on the black market, asssemble the device and ship it here. And all it would take would be a couple of sympathizers in management telling them where the security holes are.

Why couldn't that have been done at any one of the hundreds of other ports operated by DPW? Don't tell me you think P&O did security. Security is the responsibility of Homeland Security, no matter who is running the ports.

Guess what company will now be able to get their muslim "employees" work visas to the U.S. to "manage the ports"?

I would think that, with the awful threat of a nuclear weapon unloaded through one of our ports and then detonated in a city looming large, the Bush administration would see to it that NO Arab country have anything to do with managing said ports.

Say bye-bye to winning in 2006 and beyond, all thanks to Dubya.

Only someone with both selective amnesia and fear of the spin of a dying media would say something this ignorant and paranoid.

The GOP will win seat in 2006 and elect a President in 2008, all thanks to Dubya. Anyone who does not see that is too stupid to reason with.

Discussion on this topic has reached Schiavo/Meirs level. It is simply out of control

Don't think so brother, you are just feeling the heat of pissed off conservatives, possibly some lurking dems getting a few shots in. All in all, a bad PR nightmare.
