The only thing I can figure is that some deal was struck with the UAE for us to use it as an operating base in case Iran tries to shut down the staights of Hormuz. Those straights are 800 miles from baghdad but the UAE sits right on it. Close enough to use attack helicopters along the southern Iranian coast if need be.

Maybe, but Bush had best be revealing why he is outsourcing port security when we are paying zillions of dollars for dozens of state and federal agencies to do the job.
And how much faith can we have in a country of the Third World to defend our ports?
This is a bad move.

It's worth noting that Harriet Miers' nomination came at the low point of George Bush's presidency, and ended 24 before Patrick Fitzgerald's Grand Jury was set to expire.
Had Bush nominated Sam Alito in October of 2005, one could argue that he wouldn't have had the political capital to win that fight, at the time. At the very least, one could argue, it was too dangerous of a time to be risking a superb nominee such as Alito (and yet, he had to nominate somebody).
When you look at it in that light, Harriet Miers served a valuable purpose. I tend to think that was by design.

Thanks for the excerpt and link to his prowess at poker which I
had forgotten about, but he is playing with marked cards in Snow and Sanborn and his bluff will be called to all our sorrow.
I really can't stand to see this man crushed like this and I pray someone with some influence can convince him to fire those who have used him and abused him and us.
I'm just not going to deal with this any longer. I have failed too often in the political field to instill honesty and integrity and the one glorious moment Sunday when Allan Simpson so eloquently (ha-ha) deveined the press was the only shining memory for me.
Sad, very sad.

OK thenat least he's consistent. ; )
My position is clear: From outward appearances, I do not like this idea. However, I am willing to concede that perhaps, just perhaps the President is privy to more information than I am. I am patient, and I am willing to trust him on this. You are not.
Clear and fair. We'll have to agree to disagree on how to react.

Bush beats up on those who refuse to think. He takes their nonsense, forms it into a club, and proceeds to beat them about the head and shoulders with it. His stance will win him lots of points (and cooperation) with Arab nations.

***revealing why he is outsourcing port security***
OK...
So Using your logic, what should we do about the "Port Security" that's been outsourced to the Chinese, Saudis, Germans, Brits, Norwegians, Kuwaiti's, Koreans, Malays, Greeks, Taiwanese and others for the last 3-4 DECADES????
To: Pukin Dog
We don't control the President.Well, actually we do, through the Congress and the Senate and the Constitution, but I know what you mean.

TNT to unveil UAE-Iran road transport service
Dubai: TNT Express, the worlds leading B2B express delivery company, will launch the Middle East s first UAE -Iran road express this November.
The thrice-weekly Sharjah-Bandar Abbas route is part of the companys plan to double its Middle East Road Network (MERN) revenues within the next three years.
Iran has consistently featured as a top 10 destination for TNT UAE and currently represents around five per cent of our total revenue, said Bryan Moulds, UAE Country General Manager, TNT Express.
We have excellent ground infrastructure throughout Iran and with this new offering, we anticipate our Iranian business to at least double in the next 12 months.
The new road express route will include TNTs fully inclusive door-to-door service. The company will use its state-of-the-art bonded trailers for deliveries to Iran, which will include full track and trace technology, customs clearance, GPS tracking and cost effective prices on heavy weight consignments.
