THE Vatican has issued a stout defence of Charles Darwin, voicing strong criticism of Christian fundamentalists who reject his theory of evolution and interpret the biblical account of creation literally.
Cardinal Paul Poupard, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, said the Genesis description of how God created the universe and Darwin's theory of evolution were "perfectly compatible" if the Bible were read correctly. His statement was a clear attack on creationist campaigners in the US, who see evolution and the Genesis account as mutually exclusive.
"The fundamentalists want to give a scientific meaning to words that had no scientific aim," he said at a Vatican press conference. He said the real message in Genesis was that "the universe didn't make itself and had a creator".
This idea was part of theology, Cardinal Poupard emphasised, while the precise details of how creation and the development of the species came about belonged to a different realm - science. Cardinal Poupard said that it was important for Catholic believers to know how science saw things so as to "understand things better".
His statements were interpreted in Italy as a rejection of the "intelligent design" view, which says the universe is so complex that some higher being must have designed every detail.

egads. Have faith man !!
The Cardinal should read origen of species.
They didn't say evolution was in the Bible, they said it didn't contradict the Bible.... who was the idiot in charge of the headline?
I agree totally...They are both compatable...the REAL theory...not the ones the Atheist fundamentalists (lol) portray
This one's yours
kinda interesting
Maybe part of the intelligent design is evolution. Good plan, let us adapt to our changing environment. Smart guy, that designer.
How dare you..............agree with me.

I understand what they are trying to say, but they say it mighty poorly.
Evolution is in stark contrast with the belief in God.
You either believe that God created the heavens and the earth, or you believe you evolved from monkeys and the universe just EXPLODED and came together to form that wonderful galaxy out there, planets aligned so neatly, everything in order. That indicates there was a creator, how can one look around and see such beauty and not realize that some higher power put it there?
Well that makes two of us who will adapt to Global Warming. In fact, since I'm in NH, I say bring it on.
God created the world. What we know as evolution is our understanding of the method He used. Pretty simple stuff, really.

You are showing your ignorance. The Creation scriptures define a day as "evening and morning". The creation story is referred to in several subsequent passages as occurring in "six day". The Catholic church just caved into liberalism.
I think you should read the actual statement and not he one paragraph summary before saying that.
Ask a geologist. That we are here now is impossible. Ask a physicist. Thank God for our molten core and our moon. How is it that all the civilizations around the world learned to write at about the same time, only a few generations ago. And domesticated animals, only historically recently. Examine the time line of creation, allowing for the many discontinuities in the sedimentary record, and see that mankind has been an almost instantaneous occurance in the 59th minute of the 23rd hour. Of course science and the Word is consistent.
